My Preparation strategy

Summer Internships are the most awaited at any MBA school. It is our first attempt at corporate exposure in the domain of our choice. They are a reason to make all MBA students nervous. I am majoring in Human Resources from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Bangalore. The field of HR was quite unexplored for me as I was from the commerce background.

Here are a few preparation tips that helped me while preparing for my SIP:

Know your Subject well

Understand your specialisation and the basic concepts involved in it.

Understand the components of your domain

In Human Resources, you should know in brief about different domains like Compensation and Benefits, Performance Management, Talent Acquisition, Learning and Development, etc

Have an understanding / Background of the company that you are applying for

Know the business of the company that you are applying for. It is very important to know about the company

Have an understanding of how your specialisation is connected to other areas

Understanding how your work in your specialisation impacts business on a whole is very important. In the end, everything is about business and its profits.

Know what lies in the future of your domain

For the field of human resources, Analytics is the future. Understand various important technologies which will define the future of HR.

Some tips to crack the interview for SIP

Stay calm!

Having deep knowledge about the field is not required

Be confident and have a positive body language

Understand the company background well

My internship experience

My internship was at Angel Broking as a part of their Recruitment and Selection team. During my internship, I understood the recruitment process in its totality. As an intern, this helped me understand the nuances of Recruitment. I was mentored directly by the CHRO of the company who gave deep insights on how to improve the Job description aspect within the company. As I closely worked with him I understood how to think strategically and plan HR activities keeping long term goals in perspective.

The learnings of the past two months

My two months at the internship gave me insights on the importance of networking and coordination. Also as my job involved completing Job descriptions for the company for all of their departments, I had to learn the importance of working within deadlines.

How your first year of MBA helped you?

The theoretical knowledge acquired during the first year of MBA helped understand the nuances of a basic job description. That combined with the requirements of the company helped me give my best to the company and its objectives

How is it that you contributed to the company?

The efficiency and effectiveness of my project will help the company attract better talent. This will, in turn, help the company build on its performance. The redesigning of elements within the job portal will help gain better employees for the company.

Advise for juniors

SIP is more about understanding your specialisation in practical and working in a corporate environment. This opportunity should be utilised well to understand business and the impact that every domain has on the other. An MBA student should not have knowledge limited to his domain but should rather have an overall perspective.
