'Damn it', I swore loudly as I woke up in the middle of the night to pull my comforter over me but could not sleep. I sat up confused and let my mind drift back from the dreamy imagery to the reality of my dark room. It was raining again. Again!? I got up and went out to the balcony, stood at a corner of it, mere inches away from the loud rains, extended my hand to touch the falling raindrops, saw the rains falling at a distance on the greens of trees and mountains and was taken back into the land of surreal imagery with my eyes wide open.
In a world that is highly competitive, where people are looking for breakthrough solutions that could provide instant results, the power of Blue-Sky thinking cannot be emphasized enough!
Michael Dubin, created a video - that made fun of pain & money spent on shaving and posted it on YouTube. It went viral and that laid the foundation for the Dollar Shave Club, which 4 years later is being acquired by Unilever for $1 billion.
"I’m not uncertain." This frequently used statement on Wall Street is used by traders to indicate a sure shot profitable bet on a financial asset trade. They never say “I’m certain” as that would indicate zero risk – and there is no such thing as a riskless investment. Even instruments backed by governments can result in a loss, as seen by the negative yields on sovereign bonds.
Talk about women empowerment. The time is now! A few days back, I read an article in the newspaper on companies increasingly institutionalizing initiatives to retain women who take a break in their mid-30s. In India, at least 4 out of 10 women give up their careers by the age of 30, largely due to familial reasons including maternity leave. To control attrition at this level, companies such as Infosys and SAP Labs have come up with apps to engage with women during their maternity leave. Apart from these, there are several start-ups such as Sheroes that are offering part-time, flexible job opportunities for women who want to return to the workforce. While I was exploring all such alternatives, somewhere deep within me was this desire to pursue an MBA. It gives me immense pleasure and pride to say that IIM Calcutta, too stands in this league of institutions who has given me this wonderful opportunity to fulfill my dream.
April 4th 2016 - First day of my internship, the day it all began - Entered the organization with lot of enthusiasm and a pinch of nervousness. A lot of things were running in my mind about the unwholesome life of corporate people and their culture. But I never imagined that all these thoughts would be shattered in just a couple of months. I felt so at home, within days’ time I became part of the team and I felt myself as a Tier not as an intern anymore and that is all because of the excellent team I worked with. That day is the start of two months of wonderful journey which I would cherish forever.
Decisions make our lives take many unheralded twists in the future. We make tons of quick decisions unconsciously, others we hem and hover in agony. After eons of work put together, we make the grade but that just marks the beginning of a tumult of getting into a top business school. It is the basic habitude to deal with mental agony before we weigh the probable options of choosing our B-School – for it is as difficult as belling the CAT! But what we must realize is that it is time for us to take a well pondered decision which can steer us towards our destiny. Our lives thus far have been roller coaster rides through highs and lows. Yet, we enter into another Hel(L) of a ride, where we are expected to surpass one hurdle after another, with a diminishing finish line.
