I just finished reading a fascinating book, Can China Lead?: Reaching the Limits of Power and Growth (Harvard Business Review Press, 2014) by three very experienced scholars from Harvard Business School and Wharton. For a book whose central text (excluding appendices, tables and notes) is just 180 pages, this book is majestic in its sweep as it seeks to cover history, politics, economics and business in China.
A major chunk of B-School students come from the usual disciplines of engineering & commerce. In such a scenario, getting to know the rationale behind the decision of those rare breeds of lawyers & doctors to opt for an MBA after their highly laborious education & somewhat successful careers never ceases to baffle us. We tried to decipher this by interviewing Dr. Arjun, an MBBS, a philanthropist, a proud blood-donor & currently, a management student IIM Kozhikode. He strongly believes in the philosophy that if you are a blood donor, you are a hero to someone, somewhere, who receives your gracious gift of life. Here’s what he had to say about all this.
Earlier in the season we had published an unverified report on IIM Ahmedabad's final placements for the batch of 2014. IIM Ahmedabad has now released the final placement report in the CRISIL - audited IPRS format. (You can download it from their website). The IPRS format is very rigorous and granular in the level of detail provides. Most placement committees will be terrified if asked to report their data in this format - too many skeletons will come tumbling out of their closets. IIM Ahmedabad has shown commendable leadership among Indian B schools to push ahead with this format. On the other hand, it is easy to be truthful with disclosures when the truth itself paints such a rosy picture.

The 179th day of this year was auspicious for us in all aspects of life. We knew we were all here at Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (IIMR) finally for a purpose, though the real purpose of doing a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) varied for each “Kathor”.

So the other day I was sitting in my room, trying to ignore my group’s entreaties to come help them out with our class presentation, and whiling away time by researching random stuff on the Internet. During my excursions, I came across a rather funny video about the FIFA World Cup which was at that moment in full swing. And even though it was about 14 minutes long, it held my attention throughout because it was so hilarious. But once that outburst of mirth had subsided, I found myself deep in thought. Because though the video had been thoroughly entertaining and the content side-splitting, it actually spoke about a couple of very serious issues - the riots happening in Brazil over the hosting of the World Cup and the rampant corruption present in football’s governing body, FIFA.
