Sales Internship at Perfetti Van Melle: Elections, Sun, Candies and Gums

Unwrapping Begins
First of all, I’ll like to write this saga anonymously to provide greater details and to cover my shortcoming of burping more than allowed. My internship was with a laaaaarge Indian IT firm that made a good transition from being a Vanaspati company to IT. The internship seemed fine but I was more excited about the location because most of the people got absorbed in Bangalore and that is where best buddy lives. It was a chance for a reunion.
Coming from an IT Background along with 1 year of MBA education in an IIM, I could not have asked for a better place to do my summer internship program. People say internships are the time when a student gets to understand the stark realities of the field which he wishes to enter and continue for the rest of his working career. My internship at Microsoft Gulf based in Dubai, the headquarters for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) division of Microsoft was unarguably the most fascinating learning experience I have had in my short career thus far. I was travelling to Dubai for my internship and became the envy of all my classmates. There are no words to express my feelings on entering the office premises on Day 1 and receiving the company ID card. The first meeting with the manager began casually with both of us having self-made coffee and him forcing me to remove my tie despite my reluctance. Just when I started to wonder that it was just the first day and my manager wanted me to relax and be casual, he wasted no time and began his explanation on how the Microsoft software OEM business works in the Gulf and what was exactly expected of me over the next 8 weeks. #Amazing initial feelings#
The initial excitement... The most awaited internship tenure with Microsoft Sales and Marketing Division began with a bang. I was invited to stay at the ‘Taj’ for a brief period of 15 days. Excitement had already crept into me as I went through the project briefing. It was a customer facing project that involved a lot of field work. I braced myself to enjoy the next two months, I was eager to be challenged against my strengths. During this internship tenure, I had a very unique experience in many ways,
My summer internship experience started with the onset of the summer placements season at IIFT. It is usually as very stressful time for all the candidates who are vying for that perfect summer internship. In such an environment, I found that I was remarkably calm and unaffected by the atmosphere around me. This was perhaps because I had resigned myself to the fact that I was going to be among the last ones to get placed. Such low expectations were probably the result of having failed in 12 of the last 13 interviews that I had appeared for during the final year of engineering. So it came as pleasant surprise when I found myself selected for one of the more coveted profiles on campus very early on in the summer placement season. The next two trimesters were spent in pleasant anticipation of the upcoming internship.
