Thoughts Of An IIT Grad In An IIM

Last year I was in NIT Durgapur and the campus placement started at the month of July. There were many good companies that came to our campus for recruiting. All the students tried their best to get into those companies so the competition was very tough among the students. Also, there were some students who have another dilemma either they should prepare for Campus Placement or they should prepare for CAT.
It is strange how sometimes we randomly find things which we didn’t even know were missing in our lives (close enough to Latent needs in Marketing terminology?). I remember, at some point in time during the sixth semester of my B.Tech, being utterly clueless about what was missing in my life I decided to give CAT a shot. We all strive throughout our lives to rise above mediocrity. Hence studying in an IIM was always ‘The Dream’, but my preliminary research taught me, simply a good score in CAT can’t fetch you your dream. A large portion of my CAT interview comprised of me arguing with the panellists how I think CAT’s policy of providing an extra weightage based on work experience is unfair and increases the challenge for freshers to get into good b-schools. That day was the beginning of the journey where we have to prove our worth at every point to make ourselves noticeable in the harsh lifeless corporate world.
Firstly, I sincerely apologise for starting off with some scary facts, but the sensitivity and gravity of this issue warrant that such facts should be spoken. This is a small attempt to help the people suffering from stress related depression, which has currently found its home in the minds of Indian students and working adults – something which was never present in the previous generations.
It is that time of the year. Notifications are out. CAT 2017 will be held on 26th November 2017. The admission to 20 IIMs (Old, New and Baby) and hundreds of public (schools like NITIE, SJMSoM etc.) and private business schools (SPJIMR, MDI etc.) will take through the scores of the Common Admission Test to be held on this Sunday in November.
In response to my article on the Gap Year, there have been several queries regarding how to prepare for GK. For XAT, GK is a part of the entrance exam, while several exams don’t have this it always helps to be updated on Current affairs, be it for GD/interviews
When I left my hometown (Samastipur, Bihar) for embarking on my 2- year PGDM journey at LIBA, Chennai, I never knew that I will fall in love with my new home within a month. But that is how LIBA is. It grows on you.
As the train left Rourkela station on 16th of june, 2017, there wasn’t a tiny bit of sadness on my parents’ face. There was but a whole ocean of pride, easily discernible. Their son was going to an IIM, the nearest one to home. “Make sure you come home on alternate weekends, beta”, were the last words I heard my mother say before the train noisily dragged out of the station.
