Innovation - An entrepreneur's journey from zero to one

What exactly is innovation? How can we innovate? As an aspiring entrepreneur, these questions have always baffled me for a long time. As Peter Thiel says in his famous book, "Zero to One", future is a state where things are different from the present. So how can we reach that state? Thiel further elaborates that the future can be reached only through changes - horizontal changes and vertical changes. Horizontal changes take place when we travel from one to n – that is just by copying the existing things. Whether vertical changes take place when we travel from zero to one - building something out of nothing. The onus is on entrepreneurs to envision the unknown, to build the future out of oblivion.

There was a girl observing the crowd passing by the lane and watering the plants at the same time. Then she came to pen down what all she observed in the people, what amazed her and what disturbed her. She immediately called her father who was on Indian Army duty far away from her telling him “Papa! You were right. Not all of us are same. I could not find any two person same in the entire week of observation. Even me and Didi are also very different.” And that girl is me, who has always tried to draw patterns in human behaviour, natural creatures and what not, but have failed miserably. This is because we, humans are and will be an entire universe in ourselves.

One conglomerate that according to me has been the epitome of change is Aditya Birla Group, the organization has always been one which has transformed itself with time and ensured it stays ahead of its competitors. The one department that has attracted me the most would be Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited.

How I know ABG and what it means to me!

 One of my first encounters with ‘The Aditya Birla Group’ happened when I was barely 9-10 years old, in my 4th Standard. Back then, I had this hobby of cutting out pictures of famous personalities, mostly Sportsmen, Scientists and business tycoons from newspapers and pasting them in a scrap book. So, when I read about how ABG started, what all businesses did it have it’s reach in, how big it was as a group, and while my scissors worked their way around the picture of Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla, the Chairman on ABG, I was in awe! By the time I was mature enough to know what the word ‘Conglomerate’ meant, it had become my, what they call, ‘a dream company’ for me!
