For those who couldn't perform well in CAT, it might seem that the door to management studies in a reputable college is closed. But another door is indeed open. Yes, you have another chance, an alternate way to pursue your management career. In this article, we will focus on National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) admissions 2020 through GATE, for the programmes - PGDIE/ PGDMM/ PGDPM.
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) is an institute located in Mumbai set up exclusively for Industrial Engineering and management programmes. The institute offers admission to five Postgraduate programmes out of which three are based on GATE scores. Admission to those three programmes (in the year 2020) will be based on GATE scores of the years 2018, 2019, and 2020 and performance in GD/PI.
Programmes offered:
The three diploma courses are -
PGDIE: Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering - 126 seats (approx.)
PGDPM: Post Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Management - 40seats (approx.)
PGDMM: Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management - 40seats (approx.)
The application process is common to all PGDIE/PGDMM/PGDPM programme. Candidate can apply for more than one Programme. It must be noted that students in the final year of graduation can also apply.
Fees:
Fees in NITIE is among the lowest, considering its high reputation. The total fee for the two-year course is the same for all three programmes, it will be around 12.5 lakhs.
Eligibility criteria:
(The below rules are from last year's notification issued by NITIE. Generally, these criteria remain the same each year, but you are advised to refer to NITIE's website for the latest rules.)
For 2019 Admission: The Candidates were required to have an aggregate 60% marks (relaxable by 5% in case of SC/ST/PWD candidates) in Engineering / Technology graduation and a valid GATE score. As per Govt. of India rules, reservation of seats existed for SC/ST/OBC-NC (Non-Creamy) and PwD candidates. Programme-wise graduation level eligibility was as follows:
- For PGDIE programme applicant with any branch in Engineering/ Technology can apply.
- For PGDMM programme candidates with only specific engineering disciplines can apply. These disciplines are - Mechanical, Production, Automobile, Chemical, Textile, Electrical, Electronics, and other relevant branches such as Industrial engineering, Instrumentation, and Industrial electronics.
- For PGDPM programme candidates with only specific engineering disciplines can apply. These disciplines are - Mechanical, Production, Automobile, Chemical, Civil, Textile, Electrical, Electronics and other relevant branches such as Industrial engineering, Instrumentation, and Industrial electronics.
Getting into NITIE includes two steps.
Step1 : Clear the cut off to get a call for GD and PI. The cut off depends upon your GATE scores and not on the marks. The GATE score cut off varies year to year and is different for different categories of students.
Step2 : After the call, you have to crack the GD and PI round to get admission.

The Class of 2019 was a perfect blend of fresh graduates and experienced professionals. It had students from diverse engineering backgrounds coming from prestigious institutes like IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, etc.
NITIE, Mumbai wrapped up the final placements for its 2017-19 batch with the highest domestic annual package of Rs 46.5 LPA. The average salary offered this year was Rs 19.77 LPA, and the median compensation was 19.12 LPA.
The application forms of NITIE Admission through GATE 2020 would probably be available from the first week of February till the last week of March (you are advised to go through the NITIE website to find the actual dates). Candidates must register first before filling the application and paying the application fee. If selected, candidates will have to join and attend the classes tentatively from June 2020.
