QS Global MBA Rankings 2027: Only 3 Indian B-Schools Make the Global Top 100
The QS Global Full-Time MBA Rankings 2027 are out, and India has a mixed showing this year.
While 19 Indian institutions feature in the global rankings, up from 14 last year, only three Indian B-schools have made it to the global top 100.
IIM Bangalore remains India's highest-ranked B-school at #64, followed by IIM Ahmedabad at #70 and IIM Calcutta at #95.
However, all three have slipped from their 2026 positions, with IIM Calcutta seeing the sharpest decline.
So, what changed this year, and why are Indian B-schools moving down even as India's representation in the global ranking continues to expand?
IIM Bangalore, Ahmedabad & Calcutta: 2027 vs 2026

QS uses rank bands for several programmes, so movement within a band cannot be measured precisely. The 2027 ranking has 19 Indian institutions, including five new entrants.
India's Top 3 IIMs Have All Slipped
IIM Bangalore remains the highest-ranked Indian B-school for the fourth consecutive year, but has fallen from #52 to #64=.
It continues to perform particularly well on employability, ranking #29 globally and #2 in Asia on this indicator. It also ranks #51 globally for Thought Leadership.
IIM Ahmedabad has dropped from #58 to #70=. It remains among the global top 100 for Employability and Thought Leadership and is the only Indian institution in the global top 100 for Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes, at #84.
IIM Calcutta has seen the biggest fall, moving from #64 to #95.
Despite the overall decline, IIM Calcutta ranks #39 globally for Employability, keeping all three top Indian IIMs inside the global top 40 on this particular metric.
India's Global MBA Presence Is Actually Growing
The fall in the top three IIMs does not mean India's presence in the QS rankings has contracted.
Quite the opposite.
19 Indian institutions feature in the 2027 QS Global Full-Time MBA Rankings, compared with 14 in 2026 and just five in 2020. Five Indian institutions have entered the rankings for the first time this year.
The highest-ranked new entrant is O.P. Jindal Global University, placed in the #171–180 band.
The other four new entrants are:
- Jaipuria Institute of Management
- School of Business and Management, CHRIST (Deemed to be University)
- School of Leadership and Management, Manav Rachna
- Vikrant University, Gwalior
All four are placed in the 301+ band.
Across the MBA and specialised Business Master's rankings, 28 Indian institutions feature, making India the fourth-most represented country after the US, UK and France.
Why Have Indian B-Schools Fallen in the QS Rankings?
This is where the 2027 rankings get interesting.
A lower rank does not necessarily mean that an institution's MBA programme suddenly became worse.
QS rankings are relative rankings. A school can continue to perform strongly on some metrics while moving down because competing schools have improved more quickly on other metrics.
According to QS, Indian business schools faced stronger competition from global peers particularly in:
- Return on Investment
- Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes
- Diversity
At the same time, 10 Indian entries improved their performance on the Thought Leadership lens.
1. Employability is a strength for Indian IIMs
Employability carries the largest weight in the QS methodology at 40%.
And this is where India's top IIMs perform strongly.
| B-school | Global Employability Rank |
| IIM Bangalore | #29 |
| IIM Ahmedabad | #35 |
| IIM Calcutta | #39 |
IIM Bangalore is also second in Asia for Employability.
So, strong employer perception and graduate employment outcomes continue to support the Indian IIMs.
2. ROI and Value for Money can significantly affect the overall ranking
Value for Money accounts for 20% of the QS ranking.
It includes:
- Return on Investment
- Payback Month
This matters because QS is not simply asking how much graduates earn. It is also looking at the relationship between the cost of an MBA and the financial return associated with it.
Global MBA programmes competing in the same ranking may therefore gain ground if they perform better on these measures.
3. Alumni Outcomes and Entrepreneurship matter too
Alumni Outcomes account for another 15% of the ranking.
This includes:
- Alumni Impact
- Entrepreneurship
This is an area where QS says global peers outpaced Indian institutions this year.
IIM Ahmedabad is the only Indian institution in the global top 100 for Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes, ranking #84.
4. Diversity contributes 10%
Diversity accounts for another 10% of the overall score.
QS considers:
- Women faculty ratio
- International faculty ratio
- International student ratio
- Women student ratio
Interestingly, Indian institutions also have pockets of strong performance here.
Woxsen School of Business ranks #33 globally and #1 in Asia for the Diversity lens.
So the Indian story is not uniformly negative across individual indicators.
QS Global MBA Rankings 2027: Methodology
The QS Global MBA Rankings evaluate MBA programmes across five broad areas:
| Ranking Indicator | Weight |
| Employability | 40% |
| Value for Money | 20% |
| Alumni Outcomes | 15% |
| Thought Leadership | 15% |
| Diversity | 10% |
The ranking covers more than 420 MBA programmes across 65 countries and territories.
This methodology is important to understand before interpreting the rankings.
For example, a school with strong placements can still move down if it does not perform as strongly relative to its global competitors on ROI, entrepreneurship, alumni outcomes or diversity.
What Happened at the Top Globally?
The global top of the ranking has also seen considerable movement.
| Rank 2027 | B-school | Country |
| 1 | MIT Sloan | US |
| 2 | Harvard Business School | US |
| 3 | Stanford Graduate School of Business | US |
| 4 | Penn (Wharton) | US |
| 5 | Cambridge Judge | UK |
| 6 | HEC Paris | France |
| 7 | Oxford Saïd | UK |
| 8 | INSEAD | France |
| 9 | London Business School | UK |
| 10 | Chicago Booth | US |
MIT Sloan has moved from #3 in 2026 to #1 in 2027, while Penn Wharton, which topped the 2026 ranking, has moved to #4.
The US continues to dominate the very top of the ranking, with the top four positions going to US business schools.
What Does This Mean for MBA Aspirants?
The QS 2027 rankings show two things happening at the same time.
India's representation is expanding: 19 Indian MBA programmes now feature in the global ranking.
But the top Indian IIMs are facing stronger competition: IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta have all dropped in the overall ranking.
The important point is that overall rank does not tell the entire story.
IIM Bangalore, for example, is #64 overall but #29 globally for Employability. IIM Ahmedabad is #70 overall but #84 globally for Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes. Different schools can therefore have very different strengths within the same overall ranking.
For MBA aspirants, the useful approach is to look at the individual parameters alongside the overall rank, particularly if factors such as employability, ROI, entrepreneurship or international exposure matter to your career plans.
