Why I Chose IIM Bangalore Over IIM Ahmedabad – Even After Converting Both

Every year, thousands of CAT aspirants dream of getting into the “Holy Trinity” of IIM A, B, and C—and most would happily take IIM Ahmedabad if given the chance. It’s the oldest IIM, ranked #1, with a global reputation.

So when I converted IIM A, B, and C, people naturally expected me to choose A.

But I chose IIM Bangalore. And here’s why.

Quick Background

I come from small towns across Chhattisgarh, studied at IIT Kharagpur, and worked for nearly 4 years – including a strategy role at AB InBev, where I worked directly with global directors and senior leaders.

I wasn’t preparing for the CAT for years. I took the exam with just 2 months of focused prep, while working full-time. No coaching. Just a lot of mocks.

I scored 99.84 percentile, with 99.97 in DILR. I only applied to IIM A, B, and C—because I was clear: I was happy with my job, and if I couldn’t get into a top IIM, I’d continue working.

When all three converts came in, I was thrilled. But the real decision had just begun.

So... Why Not IIM A?

IIM Ahmedabad is elite, no doubt. The case method, the brand, the rigor – it’s everything you’d expect from a top B-school. But a few things made me pause:

  • Culture Fit: I felt IIM Bangalore’s vibe suited me more – slightly more laid-back, intellectually open, and collaborative. It felt more “me.”
  • Peer Group Experience: The average work experience at IIM B is higher than at A. Coming in with ~4 years of experience myself, I didn’t want to feel out of place.
  • Lifestyle Continuity: After living independently and working in corporate for years, I wanted a transition that wouldn’t be jarring. Bangalore’s campus offered that – better climate, city access, and a mature ecosystem.
  • Gut Feel: I talked to alumni from all three IIMs, and surprisingly, my gut kept pointing toward B. Sometimes, your intuition knows things your logic can’t articulate.

But Isn’t IIM A the "Best"?

Sure, if we’re ranking institutions like stock prices.

But the “best” B-school isn’t the same for everyone. It depends on your goals, your learning style, your personality, and even your stage in life.

For me, I wasn’t looking for a brand to escape my job. I was doing well at work. I wanted a recalibration space – to grow, reflect, and evolve as a leader.

And I felt IIM Bangalore would give me that breathing room.

Final Thoughts

Choosing B over A wasn’t about rejecting prestige – it was about choosing alignment over optics.

IIM A is amazing. But for me, IIM B felt right.

And if you’re someone making this choice in the future, just remember: "Don’t just chase the best name – chase the best fit."
