Most of the b-schools welcome the first year students through an orientation program which will not only help them to take their baby steps in management career but also lays a strong foundation stone for the students to come out in bright colours after their 2-year-old Journey. The b-school which i belong to, IIM Trichy provided us with a wonderful orientation program including guest lectures of prominent persons from top notch companies like Nissan, L&T, Mahindra&Mahindra etc.

All the guest lectures were useful to us which gave us a good insight on the career after MBA and we used to have Question and Answer session after every guest lecture where we will get a chance to interact with our Guests. Those sessions motivated us a lot because most of the guest lecturer’s shared their journey to reach the top notch position, challenges faced by them and ways to address those challenges. They stepped into our shoes and answered all the questions patiently which is really appreciable.

Coming to the story, on the last day of our orientation we had a guest lecture from Mr Rajeev Dubey, President (HR, After-Market & Corporate Services) and Member of the Group Executive Board from Mahindra & Mahindra. What differentiated him from other guest lecturer’s was that he had voluntarily requested for a question and answer session but the twist is he has come up with certain set of questions and the students are supposed to answer them. We were all surprised to know that a person who is holding a top position has come up all prepared with questions and answers written in small placards.

More over his topic of the presentation was not only about managerial skills but also about life skills. He started his presentation with 3+5 , talking in detail about 3 essential skills and 5 useful skills every human being should have.

The three essential skills included

1) Accepting no limits

2) Alternate thinking

3) Driving positive change

The 5 useful skills he talked about was

1) Importance of empathy, kindness’

2) Multiplier

3) Innovation, taking a risk

4) Mindfulness

5) Trust

What attracted me is that his PPT dint have any content related to our academic or our career,

but it had the content which is useful for every individual for his/her holistic development. One of the quotes which he gave during the lecture still rings around my ears and that is

"You will not have authority unless you earn it"

He uttered this quote with so much charisma so that each and every student who was present can take home and can make a change in their life.

Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?

Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Ltd is the one which I am willing to work for considering the fact that I have a passion for clothing and I would like to take up marketing roles for brands such as Louis Philippe, Allen Solly, Peter England and People. I would also wish to create innovative ways to increase their sales in any of these showrooms and expand it further to other showrooms all over India. I also wish to launch a new product in any of these products through extensive market research.
