Part A
The ABG brand is ensconced in the minds of every Indian. When people are talking about big companies in India, it is with the name of Birlas those conversations start. Looking at this now, I am not surprised that a company which has been part of every person in a country for more than a century has attained this status. The name Birla stands for tradition and trust in the Indian household.
While researching for this article, I incidentally found from my father that our first home was built with Ultratech cement. And thinking about it, I remember the construction site my high school filled with Ultratech cement bags. When people trust a company enough to build something to shelter students, the company must be doing something right.
After completing my 10th standard, I got my first mobile phone. The first network connection I got was an Idea connection. I remember spending hours speaking and messaging with my friends. Whenever I reminisce about these times, I feel a sense of nostalgia and happiness.
During my college, I was part of an all-terrain vehicle racing team. Whenever my mother saw videos of me driving that vehicle, she questioned my rash driving. I always said that safety was paramount to us and if not anything, the tires will save me. Researching now, I found that Birla Carbon constituted the tires. So I wasn’t entirely wrong.
I still remember wearing a formal shirt for the first day to college. It was a Peter England shirt. I can still feel the butterflies from that day. These are just a few conscious examples I was able to think of, on how the Adithya Birla Group has made an impact on my life.
Part B
Being a Formula One fan, I started to see my life as an F1 championship. An F1 champion does not get contended by winning a single race. To him, a race win is like to win another badge on their lapel. For them, the ultimate goal is to excel at all 21 races and win the F1 championship. And even after winning the championship, they don’t rest, they get ready for the next one. That shows the commitment of a true F1 champion.
In life, I try to be as committed as an F1 champion. During the third year of my college, I was part of my college’s All-Terrain Vehicle team. We were the debut team from our college to design and fabricate an All-Terrain vehicle from scratch. The flagship event for this was the SAE BAJA. As fate would have it, we were not able to qualify a design round to participate in the main round. Not losing my passion to excel in this new venture, I urged by peers to participate in another national event. Alas! We would not participate in that too as we could not complete our fabrication in time. The next year, not losing my fervor, along with my team, completed the vehicle’s fabrication, by learning from my mistakes. This made us win 3rd place in one of the main events. Apart from this, heading the marketing team of my team, I was able to garner a considerable amount of funds to make our journey a bit easier. I won the Achievers Award from my college for my role in this team. Another badge to the lapel.
It took me two very long years to crack the Common Aptitude Test and get into this wonderful B School. But never once in this time period did I yield to pressure. I endured the pain and won another race. But have I won the championship?
Well now that I have started studying in VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur, I hope to win a few more race points. And I will never lose my perseverance till I win the championship that is life!
