A young lady was going back home from her college after attending a business conclave on a fine evening. While she sat in a car stuck in traffic, she looked around to find a store that took her down the memory lane. She remembered a little girl who would go back home from school, anxious to go shopping with her mother for her birthdays and other special occasions. She remembered her first girls’ day out as a teenager, when she went shopping with her mom for her trendy party clothes. Five years from the same day, it was her first day at college, and her mom went shopping to buy the best of clothes for her daughter’s new phase. A few years down the line, here she is, pursuing her dream career, all decked up in a classy business suit that she got from the very store. A lot of things have changed in these years, but what stayed the same in the life of this twenty two-year-old is her choice of fashion retail store – Pantaloons, a brand of fashion retail store that is just as old as her, a brand of fashion retail stores whose growth she witnessed first-hand, a brand that her mother always preferred, a brand that is her go-to now.
The greatest learning here is the positive experience my mother and I, as customers, gained, and the trust we put on the brand for all our clothing needs that took us to the same brand repeatedly. Today, this is one of the most important choices we share. Not a surprise. Who could wrong the classical social learning theory?
- How I have overcome the challenges in my life to achieve my ambition
One of the biggest challenges that I faced was convincing my parents to believe in my career choices.
I am an engineer-turned-management-student. I have graduated from a fairly decent engineering college. Unlike most of the engineering graduates, I chose not to attend the placements because the process was clashing with my CAT preparation classes. It was very challenging for me let go of placements and even more challenging to convince my parents regarding the same. Because of the huge competition, the uncertainty of the test and the rounds that follow the test results, although it was important to have an option to fall back on, I strictly believed in my Plan A. I wrote multiple exams, and my heart skipped a beat every time each of the results came, and I almost lost hope. When the CAT results were announced and I got calls from some of the most coveted management institutes of the country, I heaved a sigh of relief. One of the best days of my life was when I got to know that I was accepted by Indian Institute of Management Raipur. I have learnt that it is important to believe in ourselves, keep our hopes alive and fight till the very end of the game.
