Ultra Tech Cement – The Savior of our Project
Aditya Birla Group is one of the biggest conglomerates in the Indian Market. It has a wide variety of product portfolio which is bound to touch each and every individual. I would like to share one such instance of my life where ABG has touched my life.
Before doing my MBA in IIM Raipur, I was working for a major construction firm in India in Kolkata. I was the Pre-cast yard in-charge of the Project. As the Project completion deadline was approaching near, there was a huge pressure on us from the Government agencies to build the Flyover in the shortest possible time. It was the month of November when the rainy season has ended and it was the Golden period for construction for any firm. But, suddenly our dealer refused to supply us Cement due to commercial issues and the whole project came to a standstill. As it was a Government project and only four Cement companies were approved for usage, and the dealer has outrightly stopped the supply and this meant the whole project was stalled.
All the structures were ready for casting but there was no cement available. I had a target to make 55 Pre-stressed Girders per month, and due to the shortage of cement, we were not able to cast for ten straight days. It was not only our firm but even the Government agencies came for negotiations with the dealers as stalled construction road projects cause a huge number of problems to the local people.
Fortunately for us, Ultratech Cement entered the scene, they not only provided us with cement but also provided us ready-mix concrete for a few weeks. They even helped us get all the approval from the client regarding the use of Ultratech Cement. After ten days of complete shutdown, the Project came to life again. The whole team were highly motivated and with the help of Ultratech, we were able to successfully complete the Project in time.
This intervention by Ultratech was recognized by not only the company but also by all the employees. In the following way Ultratech has not only played an important role in my life but to the nation as a whole, as we all know the problems faced by stalled projects in India.

This very famous quote of Swami Vivekananda says it all. Its all within you and you are the sole people who can drive a change for yourself. My story of change may not be dramatic and may not inspire others, but it has got great significance for me.
I was recruited as GET in the largest construction firm of India. I was posted in one of the construction site in West Bengal. I had no idea about the work culture of the construction site engineers before joining the company. I was shocked after listening to the working hours and the rigour one has to go through in this job. It has a twelve-hour job which was easily extended every day. Even Sunday was not a holiday and with the humongous pressure, we had no holidays at all, not even on National holidays.
I decided to do my MBA from one of the premier B-schools of India. But, it was almost impossible to find time and energy to study while working. Also, I was promoted and given the position of Pre-cast Yard In charge and with Project nearing completion the pressure was huge. In spite of all this, I decided that I would prepare for the CAT, which was to be held after 4 months. I divided my time into different parts, reduced time for leisure and unnecessary activities. A detailed work plan was made for the four months and I strictly followed that.
Even though there were exceptions, I was still able to maintain discipline in my life and was able to achieve what I had planned.
I finally got admissions in IIM Raipur and am part of the 2018-20 batch. I realized that the achievement was not getting onto the IIM, but the major achievement was to discipline my life. Even though there were so many issues, I was able to overcome them successfully and achieve my targets. This gives me a lot of inspirations to my future endeavours.
