Why Aditya Birla is Big in My Life?
Aditya Birla Group, the Indian multinational conglomerate is omnipresent. It is a synonym to lifestyle, with products and services that affect all walks of life. These may be textile, metals, cement, apparel, chemicals, fertilizers, financial services, telecom, BPO and IT services. The group has a major impact on every Indian’s life, including mine. Ultratech, the cement segment of ABG is the largest cement industry in India. One can see bags of Ultratech strewn about at almost every construction site, be it roads, houses or bridges, while Ultratech: The Engineer’s Choice plays in the back of our minds. Idea Cellular is one of the most common telecom networks across Indian mobile users, well known for its data packs and call services. As I moved to college, my first mobile number was an Idea. Hindalco and Novelis are the group’s players in the aluminium segment used in cans, electronics, packaging and automobiles. Having a strong presence in the financial industry, ABG offers various portfolios including health insurance, life insurance, asset management, wealth management, loans and online money portals. Another important segment of ABG is its textile group, Grasim Industries, dealing with viscose fibre, acrylic fibre and spinning mills in India and South east Asia. Pantaloons and Planet Fashion, the fashion and retail powerhouse of ABG have several brands in their kitty providing huge variety of apparels and brands like Louis Philippe, Allen Solly, Van Heusen, Peter England and People. These brands offer clothes to all kinds people from different demographics, geographic locations, preferences, genders and families. It is also this sector that has a major presence in my life with every visit to the shopping mall always including a visit to these stores. These wide-ranging companies and brands are prevalent throughout an Indian’s life and across the world. It is a global brand that has achieved leadership in 14 different industry sectors, only a few of which are mentioned above.
How I Overcame Challenges to Achieve My Ambitions in Life So Far?
Living my entire childhood comfortably under the protection of my parents could never prepare me for the four years in hostel when I moved to Indore for my graduation. The grim idea of sharing a room with a complete stranger was nothing compared to the dread of missing the home cooked food. So, it came as no surprise when I lost 15 kgs in my first year.
But I wasn’t going to give up so easily. I decided to be more responsible. I learned how to cook, do laundry, wash the dishes and manage my own accounts. I also began taking good care of my health. This experience made me conscious of all the privileges I have been given and appreciate how much I was cared for. It also taught me to be independent, confident and self- reliant. I learned the value of hard work and that anything is possible if I put my mind to it and have faith.
Thus, I completed my Mechanical Engineering. Having managed various technical and non-technical teams throughout graduation made me realize my competency lies in managing people. Thus, I gave the CAT exam and subsequently started my management education at IIM Raipur but I would always consider my experience at the engineering hostel as the first step in my journey to becoming a self-sufficient adult.
