As a person who was always afraid of public speaking, I'm glad that I have conquered that fear of mine.
Right from the time I was small, speaking in front of a large crowd seemed daunting. Once, when I participated in an elocution competition (with a lot of forcing from my mother and teachers) I blanked out in front of a large audience and it scared the living daylights out of me. It was tough to speak in class or yet participate in such competitions.
As I grew older, I saw my friends voicing their thoughts articulately and it made me wonder and ask myself that why can't I do it? My reluctance to speak was aided by my fast speech when I got excited and my tendency to gobble up words. I made a resolution to change this after realizing that I was letting many opportunities slip right out of my fingers due to this irrational fear.
Thus began a journey of speaking everyday in front of the mirror. Answering questions in class albeit very reluctantly and shyly. I also joined a personality and speaking class by the British Council which aided me in improving my people interaction skills and made me a little more confident due to the small batch size. Later as I gained confidence I also participated in elocutions and it made me happy to see the improvement in me. I might not have won these competitions but the sheer courage it took me to speak in front of a crowd and not stumble or go blank was immense and I managed to complete the speeches nicely.
In my adult life, I did a course on Public speaking from the American Council where I learnt the art of extempore and story weaving. My fear has now drastically reduced and now I am a part of the GIM Agora Speakers International Club which is essentially a toastmasters club at my B School. Even though it seems now as a small thorn, this issue poked me every time in my childhood and a little part of my adult life. I'm glad that I was able to overcome it and now am helping other students who fear public speaking do so.
