The name ‘Aditya Birla Group’ is known to me since I was a child. It is synonymous with affordable and stylish clothing (Pantaloons), connecting people (Vodafone Idea) and building homes (Ultratech Cement). One of the few things that left a mark on me were the campaigns for one of its biggest brand, Idea. The simple tagline of ‘What an Idea Sirji!’or ‘Get an Idea!’ and the causes associated with them were something that resonated with me. The ‘Walk when you talk’ campaign actually got me to my feet. I have always appreciated the different messages that were associated with these campaigns, whether it be using the internet to teach the kids in the rural areas or using it to give power to the illiterate people in a village so that they can be aware of what the politicians are doing. Whether it be breaking language barriers or understanding your partner’s life, all of these have even stayed with me today. Not only in my childhood, but now when I am starting a different journey, ABG has played an important role. The first formal clothing that I bought for my upcoming journey at MDI, was from Allen Solly and the first business suit from Van Heusen.
The path to reach MDI was also not void of obstacles. Being an introvert, it was difficult for me at first to initiate a conversation with unknown people. This was something that came a lot in the way of grabbing opportunities that were available in my school life and the first two years of my graduation. I often felt uncomfortable around people I didn’t know, and passed on the chance of being part of various activities for the same reason. This feeling also manifested itself into self-doubt and negative outlook. In order to come out of my comfort zone, I decided to take the responsibility of heading the Marketing department of my college’s Annual Economics Festival, in the last year of graduation. Though it was a little scary at first, but taking each task step by step, I tried my hardest, and managed the team the best I could. This experience helped me to come out of my zone and be more open to people. It further helped me a lot in sitting for my future interviews for B-school selection. I have still a long way to go and as I am on the path of becoming a future leader, I know that there is a need for me to constantly work on it, by interacting more with people. But one thing is for sure, the moment I put on my Van Heusen formal suit for the day I entered into MDI, there was a feeling of pride, as I had more faith in the fact that hard work and dedication can help you achieve anything. My aim is to reach a position from where I can contribute to the growth of the Indian Economy and for that I am taking one step at a time while overcoming my insecurities.
