In today’s marketing intensive world where aggressive marketing is the norm, there are but a few companies that are imprinted in the minds of consumers with ease. These companies not only have great brand equity but also have loyal customer bases. One of the quintessential examples of such a business is Aditya Birla Group. Not only is it among the top private conglomerates in the world, but it also has one of the most diverse portfolios.
The humble roots of Aditya Birla Group were laid more than a century and a half ago, and around a century before our independence. Amidst the increasing need of industries in the pre-independence phase, ABG started expanding in crucial domains such as chemicals, textile, cement, aluminium and many more. It was from that time in history that ABG emerged as a much-needed force of leadership, which stands true to this day. ABG has not only contributed to the economic and financial domains through all this time, but it has also ideologically supported the Indian Independence and progress during our colonial period. The above are just some examples of why Aditya Birla Group has made it big in not just mine, but all our lives.
Talking about my experiences, I have been going to More Megastore for a long time with my family. It is one of the shopping experiences that I remember to this day. I used to be fascinated with the sheer area of the store, the organization and the wide variety of products for sale. Although I was quite young when we started visiting, because of the smooth and convenient experiences I have had since then, it is still one of the “more” preferred store for me even today. My regular visits to More Megastores across cities were the first thing that popped up as I thought of the impact ABG has made in my life.
Looking to answer this question further, I began reading about the portfolio of Aditya Birla Group. To my utter surprise, there were brands and products in the long list that I have used directly or indirectly, read about, seen advertisements about, but never knew were part of the Aditya Birla Group! Call me ignorant, but it did not catch my attention until I consciously read about it. This exercise led me to reaffirm the belief that ABG has made it big in my life, in a much greater way than I thought.
From fashion brands such as Allen Solly, Forever 21, Pantaloons, and Peter England, which I have personally used, to brands like The Collective, Liva and Ultratech Cement, which I have frequently heard about, ABG has established its presence in all major domains of my life. Indirectly, the ABG’s presence in Banking, Construction, Textile, Chemicals and Cellular Communication continues to make its mark in our lives on a daily basis. From a phone call I make to a road I travel upon, to my clothing and grocery needs, Aditya Birla Group saves the day!
At the end of my search, I realized that ABG is omnipresent in our lives and that too subtly. And while starting writing this article I thought I knew how ABG is making its mark in my life, I was the one who ended up being the most surprised
Overcoming a Personal Challenge –
“As with the butterfly, adversity is necessary to build character in people”. The sheer need for overcoming personal challenges, no matter how small, is described eloquently here by Joseph Wirthlin.
Being a child who was fortunate enough to have a good education, a well to do family and a life full of the resources and comfort I would require, I have thankfully not faced external adversities. My challenges were more personal and maybe a bit less conventional. My family moved around a lot while I was little, which meant that I had to change and settle in new environments almost every other year. As a child, it is challenging to absorb a new culture, new weather conditions, and a whole new set of people around you. I initially fell into the trap and could not handle the grind as well. I used to be an outspoken, active person as long as I was in an environment of my comfort. But after this trend, I started to keep to myself, take a longer time to meet friends. This eventually led to a decline in my self-confidence and put into me a feeling that I was probably a misfit, so it would be better to stay isolated.
But, I was a person who had liked to communicate well and be involved in the events of any group. From the time I was able to understand that a frequent change in environments was an obstacle of my social and personal growth in some ways, I started working toward making the best of it. I consciously became friendlier, worked harder to be more attentive, and tried to expand my interests in alignment with whichever group of people I was interacting with. All these came naturally to me for the years to follow, which helps me communicate for impact and absorb new ideas to this day.
I earnestly believe that social communication, building rapports and the spirit of working in teams to become more effective is not stressed upon enough. But looking at my own example above, a definite plan to tackle all social challenges that come one’s way is extremely effective and entirely doable. On an educational level, and on the professional front as well, I reap the benefits of an outgoing, positive and understanding attitude, be it excelling in college, or bagging an international internship, or performing well in a fortune 500 company for many years. Through this piece, I urge anyone reading this to be more aware of personal social challenges anyone you know might be facing, and help them overcome it.
