Aditya Birla Group Overview

Aditya Birla Group, one of the largest Indian multinational conglomerate, headquartered in Worli, Mumbai operates in 35 countries with more than 120,000 employees worldwide. The group was founded by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla in 1857 with interests in metals, cement (largest in India), branded apparel, chemicals, fertilisers, financial services, telecom, BPO and IT services.

Why ABG is big in my life?

I come from a family of traditionalists, of successful doctors, lawyers and teachers. Growing up in the shadow of service oriented frameworks, my desire to forge my own entrepreneurial path rendered me the automatic black sheep of the house.

“What an Idea Sir Ji”, Seeing this Idea Campaign almost ten years ago, this phrase still resonates with me. I believe that “Idea” had a huge role in framing my thought process, it unknowingly developed my way of thinking.

You can’t tell the world that we make Sim Cards and expect everyone to just buy them. You have to connect to different segments according to their varied lifestyles and preferences, along with how each consumer thinks and behaves.

There did and do exist a number of competitors in the telecom sector, but my entire family had Idea connections. Why? Because they didn’t sell mobile data, or unlimited local calls. They showed raw, unfiltered lives of people and how their network helps them in their regular mundane routine.

For me, What an Idea Sir ji was always about innovating & problem solving. These traits were inculcated in me since the beginning and following the entrepreneurial path became almost involuntary after I finished my graduation. With a keen interest in Advertising and Marketing, even after more than a decade, I still believe that the “What an Idea Sir ji” ad campaign is one of the most impactful campaigns to be launched.

Challenges that I overcame in life, yet.

I belong to a service oriented family, my upbringing was modest rather than lavish. Pursuing entrepreneurship in life gets difficult when you don’t come from influence. The challenge wasn’t just in terms of lack of finances, but also a lack of theoretical knowledge and experience.

To achieve the former, I started working for a Hospitality Tech Start-Up called “DJUBO” in my final semester of Grad school. After a year and a half of practical experience I started working on my  business model. After months of market research, social media marketing, prototypes and sales I realized that to penetrate the market within any industry, a thorough knowledge of how a business functions was required. Hence, my decision to join a B-School, and then came NMIMS.

For me, as an entrepreneur, solving problems and overcoming challenges has become a way of life which I relish to the fullest.
