Q. Why is ABG big in my life?
"Take the stones people throw at you and use them to build a monument." - Ratan N Tata
No organization, I believe, has demonstrated the above words better than this conglomerate. ADITYA BIRLA GROUP, as an organization, has proved its salt time and again against the challenges and opportunities thrown at it since its inception in 1857. The conglomerate's presence as a leader in 35 countries with over 120,000 strong workforce family further makes the organization stand tall in difficult times.
Being the market leader and driving positive changes in diverse fields right from fertilizers, cement, carbon black to fashion, retail, BPO, telecom services, finance and agribusiness, ABG is truly an example of how good management practices and business can be intertwined to touch millions of lives. The group's initiative and efforts like schools for children, women empowerment by improving their skills and forming self-help groups, establishing over 15 hospitals and 4000 medical camps are truly commendable.
My association with ABG started long back when my parents decided to build a house back in 2009. The ready mix concrete mixer and cement bags proudly carried the name ULTRATECH CEMENT which further strengthened my trust in the Birla group. Pantaloons came to my family's rescue during the house-warming or greehpravesh ceremony. Placements and the first job are very important in an undergraduate's career. I once again turned to Peter England for help and confidence when it came to office formals. It has been eight years since I left my house for higher studies but the IDEA network made sure that I remain in constant contact with my parents and friends through thick and thin. Pantaloons further added to my smartness and coolness as a teen entering adulthood with dreams to make it big in life. Retail outlet MORE made sure all the necessary grocery requirements of my kitchen are met timely and under one roof.
ABG has not only impacted and improved my life but also thousands of other lives. ABG has marked an epitome of success and redefined its meaning, in its true sense.
Q. How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambition in life so far?
"Ups and downs in life are very important to keep us going because a straight line even in an ECG means we are not alive" - Ratan N Tata
I truly learned the importance and meaning of the above words in my first job. As an Area Sales Manager in Heavy Duty trucks segment, I was posted in Salem in Tamil Nadu, taking care of Salem and Coimbatore market. Being a North Indian, I faced the language barrier, food and weather issues. Communication with my peers, office staffs and customers became next to impossible with time. The frustration levels and stress used to keep me awake nights together and started taking a serious toll on my health and attitude towards my job satisfaction.
It was in these difficult and stormy times that I understood that success and opportunities will not be served to me on a plate. I decided to take control of the situation around me. Gradually, I started changing my attitude towards my office staffs, colleagues, dealerships, started learning the Tamil language and having south Indian food. Better and efficient communication via judicious and selected use of Tamil words with customers, the careful selection and sorting of customers and enquiry list and better approach improved the sales figures month on month.
Within 5 months, I became a popular face in the market among the customers, dealerships, and stakeholders. Eventually, I got a job offer from VOLVO EICHER TRUCKS for the position of Brand Marketing Manager for Heavy Duty trucks at Bangalore. I successfully converted my adversity into opportunity and made it to the Brand and Product Marketing team taking care of the Karnataka market. I hope to stand the test of time and face the challenges in future with even more vigour and enthusiasm.
