Aditya Birla Group is a global fireball worth over 44.3 Billion USD with deep reins in over 14 sectors. People rightly say, “ABG touches millions in the world. It is unlikely that you have never used a product, or travelled on a road or visited a site where ABG has not contributed in some way. Its presence in your life is massive”. They are the leading players in metals, textiles, carbon black, telecom and cement. I live in the bustling city of Mumbai and one of my favourite places in the midst of the brouhaha is the Bandra-Worli Sealink. I was pleasantly surprised when my father told me that the strong and aesthetic structure that always managed to calm me down was made from ABG’s UltraTech cement, the largest manufacturer of grey cement, white cement and Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) in India. UltraTech Cement Limited has been a notable contributor in major projects such as Mumbai’s International Airport (T2) and the Monorail project. ABG is not only a pioneer in connecting geographically, but is also a leader in the telecom industry with the acquisition of India’s leading telecom service provider, Vodafone Idea Limited. I have been a committed user of Vodafone ever since I got my first phone and swear by it till date as the fastest telecom service with the best connectivity. ABG is also a leading player in the fashion industry with the best quality formal clothes from brands like Grasim, Peter England and Pantaloons.

ABG is a leading contender in many sectors with a principled agenda “to actively contribute to the social and economic development of communities” and “build a better, sustainable way of life for the weaker sections of society and raise the country's human-development index.” It is responsible for treating 7.5 million people, immunizing 70 million children against polio and operating 56 schools for 46,500 school children. ABG has been a pioneer in the business of Grasim’s Viscose Staple Fibre (VSF) which is a bio-degradable fibre with features similar to cotton fibre. ABG is one of the Fortune 500 companies with a clear focus on sustainability and societal development. It is one of the few companies which are contributing to the development of everyone and not just themselves, and at the same time being pioneers in globalization and business expansion; the Aditya Birla Group has been triumphant in both aspects.

ABG : Touching Millions of Lives Everyday

Aditya Birla Group had a humble beginning in the small town of Pilani, Rajasthan where Seth Shiv Narayan Birla laid the foundation of the Birla Group of Companies by taking a rather calculated leap of faith into cotton trading operations. The ball was set in motion in the midst of an unstable and notably unsuccessful period of Indian rebellion against the ruling British East India Company in 1857. But despite its rickety conditions during its origin, today the conglomerate is a 44.3 billion USD corporation with a strong foothold in 14
sectors and over 50% of group revenues flowing from overseas operations in North and South America, Asia and Africa. ABG has been overcoming challenges ever since its inception and continues to make colossal impacts in sectors ranging from banking and financial services to textile and branded apparel.

Success has been my ultimate goal since I was a young little girl. I wanted to be the best at everything and strongly believed that I had the potential to do so. But as I grew older and got more and more exposure to the real world, I started becoming aware of my “inadequacies”. The general worldview of “being okay with yourself and embracing your flaws” was so misunderstood by me that I stopped trying at all. A turning point in my life was when I got less than decent marks in Class 12 Board Exams and although maintained that it didn’t affect me at all, it did. I made it a regular habit to read The Economic Times every day and it motivated me to learn a little something from all the successful business giants. ABG has been an inspiration to me ever since I developed an interest in world business. Their vision, “To be a premium global conglomerate with a clear focus on each of the businesses” motivated me to rethink my strategy for success. Maybe it isn’t about chasing after success or being perfect at everything; it is about perseverance, about having a clear focus on holistic development coupled with exemplary strategizing at every step of the way. It is about never giving up no matter what life hurdles at you and realizing that there will always be someone smarter and better than you. But your uniqueness and relentless hard work will help in creating a special distinctive niche for you.
