How you overcame challenges to achieve your ambitions in life so far?
As a child I was diagnosed with Vitiligo, a skin condition where a person develops white spots on different parts of the body, even though the disease doesn't affect a person physically except giving them a discoloration on the skin, this disease can have severe implications on a person's emotional and mental well being.
Having Vitiligo, I remember instances where people ridiculed me for having a skin condition like that, that too from the people who were twice my age. My parents always wanted to hide this disorder from the world as they thought that this disorder could have had a huge negative impact on my life. So I had to keep this disorder a secret from my close friends. I never accepted I've vitiligo, I told people that my skin was burned or I had an allergy. But at the age of fourteen, I had developed white spots on my face, and my self-confidence dropped, I didn't want to go out because of continuous stares and comments I've to endure every now and then, even from friends and relatives. As a result of this, the situation became unbearable. Sleepless nights with tears flowing down my eyes became my everyday routine. I tried to conceal my vitiligo from cosmetics but everything seems to be of no use until I accept myself the way I am. With proper treatment, the white spots on my face gradually started to decrease, but what I've learned after suffering from depression for a year, is that I've to accept myself the way I am. The first step was to break my silence and share it with people. Gradually with time, I stopped self-shaming. Now, even after having vitiligo on visible parts of my body, I'm very confident, I don't hide it with heavy cosmetics, and when anyone tries to say anything regarding vitiligo I smile and tell them that yes I've it, and never take any negative comments to my heart. Now, vitiligo isn't my weakness, it is the reason why I'm beaming with confidence. It is the reason, I have achieved great excellence not only in personal life but also in academics, now I want to achieve great heights in life and inspire people suffering from vitiligo. Right now, I'm pursuing PGDM from one of the prestigious B- schools, International Management Institute, New Delhi. After all this, I would say Vitiligo will always be a major reason for shaping my personality, for helping me overcome the biggest challenge of my life.
