PART B
‘Smooth roads never make good drivers; Clear skies never make good pilots.’ Challenges are an integral part of a chiselled life. I faced one such taxing challenge when I participated in a ‘Biotechnology Exploration Program’ at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA. I got an opportunity to join a project under the Flight 93 Reforestation program of USA.
I was coupled along with a fellow from India for the same project. The project involved the usage of a sophisticated machinery- an infrared analyser. Recording on-field readings was to be followed by processing them into graphical outputs. It was to be done using a software customised to the machinery.
Even after several attempts, me and my fellow found it difficult to comprehend the software. We decided to approach the university faculty. He agreed to teach us how the software functions.
The date of poster presentation on our project was approaching. Amidst this, my fellow met with an accident and was suggested bed rest. Suddenly, the responsibility to complete the project came down to my sole shoulders. I felt performance pressure build up. I had to manage my project work along the daily classes scheduled in the workshop.
I started to feel anxious when it was a week to the event. The thought that I wouldn’t be able accomplish the task had occupied my mind. Being in a foreign land, the emotional turmoil experienced was significant.
The faculty at the university appreciated my determination to complete the project. They guided me till I could process my readings through the software. With the successful presentation of my poster, I turned my efforts and the faith faculty had in me into rewarding results.
I consider this episode of my life to be a memorable challenge as it taught me various life lessons. To observe patience, to accept responsibilities, to keep anxiety at bay, and most importantly, never to quit. It also taught me how to manage my emotions under critical situations and maintain a balance. Also, to be more receptive and adaptive towards international exposure. I perceive myself as an improved individual post this experience in my life.
