Managing through ‘Game of Thrones’

Are you not able to influence people? Do you find difficulty in executing operations in hostile environments? Or do you get confused between your friends and foes? These are all common business dilemmas that have answers in one of the most religiously followed TV Series: A Game of Thrones. An adaptation of the famous novel A Song of Ice and Fire, written by George R.R. Martin, this wonderfully crafted TV series has become synonymous with strategy, lust and bloodshed. Here are some of the lessons that one can learn from GoT:

Most people who have made to B-school following a stint at an IIT would reckon that getting through such reputed institutions was a task unto itself. Most of us though, happen to be able bodied people. What about people who suffer from debilitating medical circumstances? I had the opportunity of talking to one such person in my batch who is one of the handful of people in this world who suffer from autoimmune disorders - he also happens to have laurels like an IIT degree, work experience at TATA Motor Finance, a seat in XLRI-BM and a PPO from Flipkart under his belt. He is  Ramaswamy Venkatarajan. Below is an excerpt from our conversation; hope this provides as much of inspiration to you as it does to me, and reinforces the fact that nothing is impossible!

In the times of increasing competition, all the colleges have started to look for building a strong competitive sustainable advantage for themselves. IIM Kashipur, keeping up with the changing times, started expanding its reach into international markets by starting a student exchange programme with a couple of French Universities. First time, 6 students were sent to complete a term (out of the 6 they were supposed to complete according to their academic curriculum) in France.
