For most MBA students, the b-school journey often starts on a very stereotypical note. It happens in an instant… stressful competitive exams, interviews in starchy formals and then suddenly you’re in! Almost overnight, your bags are packed to leave home. That’s when the gravity of it all hits you. This is it.
Once upon a time attending an early morning class at 10'o clock, half asleep I relentlessly scrounged through my case study looking for that paragraph. The one that is expected to be discussed next. Skimming through myriads of lines, I finally bumped on to something. As soon as the teacher moved to the next expected topic; my hands went up high. High enough to stand tall to talk about that one paragraph I read in class. That's the story of almost every class about "How I participated in Class Participation."
There are not many who have the good fortune of having a close friend on campus while preparing to join an IIM, fewer still who have any clue what life on campus is really like. Most of us just buckle up and decide to do an MBA just because it is a sure shot at ‘success’; at least the way society has defined it. Some sorted out souls may have grand career plans where they know exactly which institute to join, what specialization to undertake and which company to work for even! But for the uninitiated majority, we hear tidbits from friends who have cracked CAT earlier and as always, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Everyone has a story and so do I. I am here to share my story with all of you and especially those who are in the same state of confusion that I was in while making the “right choice” for my career. The intention of writing this story using the platform of Inside IIM is to be able to reach out to a wide audience and tell them that it is okay to be confused! It’s okay, not being sure about the career path you want to take. It’s okay to start late. And, it’s certainly okay to question and try out new things and fail and then try again.
Growing up, we have often been told to be the best at what we do. At least, that is what most Indian parents expect from their superstar sons and daughters. Anything even close to the best was not good enough, seldom recognized. Well, my MBA journey in the past one year has been a different story.
“There’s too much to do but not enough time.”
Have you ever looked at your pitiful mock scores and heard that small voice whispering in your head, “You won’t make it this time so why not relax & prepare for the next attempt”. If yes, then Bingo! you are just on the threshold of a world of countless opportunities because this is the day you should drown that little voice in your head and prepare for the battle yet to come.
