Virtual Internship Journey At Lear Corporation 

In these uncertain times where the pandemic has taken a toll on employment and when LinkedIn was flooded with students losing their internships and offers being revoked, I was scared to miss my internship opportunity. But LEAR kept its promise and all the interns were onboarded virtually on 27th of April 2020. My internship at LEAR Corporation was truly an enriching experience. I could not have asked for a better learning experience through virtual mode.

Nervous jitters every now and then, excitement at its peak, calling up numerous friends and juniors and taking a look at the checklist of onboarding documents a hundred times. This more or less says it all about the morning of my first day of internship. Of the numerous times that I wore business formals during MBA, never before had I thought of actually flaunting it. I was taken aback looking at people all around me so normal and casual? Am I the only one who is over-excited? Probably yes, and I had all the reason for the same. It was my first corporate stint as a fresher. The first ever of my life. A lot was at stake. I had heard so much about it – both good and not so good. Looking at my excitement, my fellow interns were like “You’re new to the corporate setup, we’ve been there; we’ll take a look at your excitement a week later.”

A clear understanding of fundamentals is imperative. Just having an overview of a sector is not enough. Many students tend to get caught in the “I-already-know-this” trap which must be avoided. As a popular saying goes, the illusion of knowledge is worse than ignorance, the scourge of superficial knowledge has cost many a student their dream companies and opportunities. MBA grads are expected to have a better understanding and insight into the various sectors and the linkages between them. Ministry of Power’s annual reports, MNRE website, Merscom India, ET Energy world, etc were some of the sources which I referred to while preparing for an internship in companies working in the Renewable and Electric Mobility domain. In the techno-managerial courses, like the one I am currently pursuing (MBA in Infrastructure Development and Management), a brush-up of one’s graduating subjects is also vital especially in core engineering streams like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, etc.
