It’s that time of the season when the CAT/XAT exam and its 99.xx scores (almost) are relegated to the side-lines as the GD-PI process (and in some cases, the strange animal called WAT), especially for the top-10 B-schools, takes centre-stage. A lot is being said on selection criteria of B-schools especially IIMs and most people seem to oppose the change that management selection processes have undergone in last 2-3 years. However one should also look at the logical thought-process that directs these changes.

The waning interest in CAT among MBA aspirants continued as this year saw around 1.85Lstudents appearing for CAT 2011, no significant change (Ref. graph) from CAT 2010. Put this in perspective, that the number also includes the JMET applicants who would have applied for the IIT-SOMs and doesn’t take much to figure out that all is not well with the CAT. Looking at this trend I can’t help but think about the future of CAT.
