A Beautiful Mistake - A Tale Of Summer Of 2018

A Beautiful Mistake - A Tale Of Summer Of 2018

It was the much-awaited placements season at IIM Bangalore. Just like any other student, I was thrilled, excited and a bit nervous when it began. My expectations were not very high, I just wanted a decent offer and expected the ride to be a smooth one. I thought it would be great if I get Hyderabad or Mumbai as my Job location since Hyderabad is my hometown and Mumbai because a majority of my IIMB batchmates would be interning there. But fate had something else in store for me. It had always been the case with me that I don't get anything in life easily and things happen in such a way that it is remembered forever. IIMB summer placements were no different. Once the placements season started, I started applying to all companies since I had no preferences as such. As a matter of fact, I also applied for Tolaram Group (If you haven't heard about it, it is a big conglomerate operating in many countries with a major stake in Africa). What I didn't notice was that the job location will be Nigeria/Ghana in Africa. It was not even in the slightest of my memory that I applied for it. Call it my negligence, ignorance or whatever you like but I just did the most beautiful mistake of my life. Then came the 3 grueling days of placement season. I got many shortlists, more than what I was expecting. Attended Group Discussions, running from one company to another with little time to even breathe, let alone eating, drinking or relaxing. But these tiring days are worth the experience. So, now Group Discussions are done and I got to know that I will be attending a few interviews the other day, one of them being my beautiful African mistake. That night I realized that I applied to some African company, but even then I just didn't pay much attention to it as I had no intention to go there nor did I realize that, what if, I get to sit for the interview of that company.

It’s almost like a dream come true when an engineer with no finance background can get a summer job in a department like equity research. Mine came true on being selected for the global research department of HSBC. In this article I will take you through my interview experience and contrast it against a few others from a finance background, and how my internship helped me in shaping my career.

Summer Internship Experience At Cummins – D Navya, SJMSOM

After completing my Engineering from PESIT Bangalore in Information Science I joined Samsung R&D Institute as Android Developer. I had a rich experience in coding at Samsung, learned many new technologies from my mentors and met many top management people. But as I looked forward to my career after next 5 -10 years I wanted to do something more apart from just coding and to reach the top of the corporate ladder.

A Summer At DBS - Jahnavi Kaza, JBIMS

The days of placements, the auditorium, the shortlists, all of them – as nostalgic as they might sound- were also some of the most anxious and nerve-breaking days of the first year of MBA at JBIMS. For a fresher, nonetheless- an engineer, I was hoping for a finance breakthrough and it finally happened!  All thanks to JBIMS for bringing in such opportunities.

Summer Internship Experience At TATA Motors - Kshitij Arora, Shailesh J Mehta School of Management

What should I say? When I think of writing about my experience. There is so much to say but I am not able to find the right words. Let me just start with the start and let's be frank. I was really scared, there won't be an intern in this part of the country from any college in the company and it is the first time I am going to this part of the country. People eat fish and Rice. How will I adapt to the food out there? People speak Bengali. I don't know ABC of Bengali. And I am alone. Well, that would be the best part of it. The first thing I had to do was to understand the hardcore yet basic mechanical concepts (and I am an electronics engineer, so you know what I mean) and the construction of a typical heavy commercial vehicle-4 stroke engine suspension, differential, gearbox, chassis, Tyre design, axle combination, BS4 & BS6 requirements. It was new and exciting. It went to another level when I went into the field and saw them working in the sand mines, stone mines, and coal mines. I was in love with 4M's - Mechanical, Mining, Marketing, and Man-Management. I had to interact with the wide array of stakeholders and that's where the real learning emerged. Everyone wanted something from the deal. They wanted different things, yet the same thing. Confused, Right? Well, that's how things work and we just have to find that win-win situation to provide that same thing.

The Joy Of Hearing And Being Heard: My Internship Experience With Cochlear India - By Anandarup Dutta, Shailesh J Mehta School Of Management

Very rarely do people pursuing their MBA get a chance to work with an organization that plays an active role in shaping people’s lives in a manner that humbles the management interns. I got a chance to work with Cochlear which is the world leader in implantable hearing solutions for those who suffer from hearing impairment.

Rethink, Revive, And Rise - Internship Elucidated!

It is often said that management education a.k.a MBA is all about managing your work or business but in my experience it turned out to be more. Management education for me became part and parcel in managing my life and its plethora of elements. Management in its literal sense became managing my happiness, my successes, my failures and more than ever, my willingness. And this willingness of mine to get into one of the prestigious colleges of management in this country led me to IIM Rohtak. The title ‘Rethink, Revive and Rise’ signifies the arduous yet fulfilling journey of mine from being a racking entity to now being a completely revived and risen person with a new hope, stability and outlook towards my journey ahead.
