There are not many management institutes in India, who sends its students for immersion in the Middle East. US is popular, Europe is a fish market, ANZ and Africa are rarely heard of. IMT DCP is one such crafted program, creators of which saw opportunity in Dubai.
It was the first day of the month, but no one had the time to make April Fool pranks. The beginning of the month had also announced the end of the semester exams in our college and the approaching internships of the students. People were busy making plans of moving to the city where they were posted. I started preparing for my first day. Everything needed to be in order; formals, blazer, documents… everything. I was going to intern with Abbott Healthcare in the sales and marketing division. Come first day and our orientation was done with us getting to know the company and its different verticals. Later we were introduced to our guides who shared with us what we were going to do in the two months of our internship. My project was primary research based where I had to meet and talk to important stakeholders and find out patterns of sale and factors affecting the same.
“Summer Internship at ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company in Mumbai as an intern with Business Intelligence team for a duration of 2 months.” This one sentence gave me manifold happiness! Firstly, I got a chance to intern with number one general insurance company of India. Secondly, I got an opportunity to work in the domain of analytics and lastly, yet most importantly, I would be spending two months of my internship at Mumbai, the place where I have been born and brought up.
My tryst with TAS started somewhat early. I had heard about it for the first time from a teacher at one of the CAT coaching centres. Listening to him go on and on about it left quite an impression on me. I went back and googled all about it. Some of the most renowned names had started their careers with TAS. Be it the former RBI Governor Dr. Raghuram Rajan, former director of IIM Ahmedabad, Mr. Ashish Nanda or various other MDs and CEOs of Tata Companies. The list of successful TAS managers was indeed long and illustrious. I was amazed at the legacy this premiere leadership program of the Tata group had created. That day itself, I had hoped to join TAS one day.
So, this time of the year most of the 1st year MBA students have completed their internship from various companies offering wide variety of profiles. The following is a conversation between two such friends who have just completed their internship.
Summer Internships was to be the time when we would get to translate all our learning from the Management course and the experience, from a score plus few years of life, into actual conventional “work”. Being a fresher, this concept had me ecstatic since the day I got selected for my Summer Internship at Tata Motors. Being a male specimen of our species, I was excited about working in the Personal Vehicle Industry even though I’m not what you would call a typical enthusiast of the field. My myopic vision limited my horizon of expectations and completely blinded me from everything beyond. A fortnight before the start of the internship, I received the project details. The biggest revelation was that I was assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Unit. This rendered all the castles in the clouds, that I’d made, to vanish into the imaginary world that they were in. This got me to my first lesson even before the internship started: “Never let your limited knowledge draw the boundary for your expectations”
“Congratulations! You made it! “, said a placecom member with a thumbs up! I was overwhelmed beyond words… I knew I had landed myself with the perfect Internship for myself and my profile. I was selected for the Bid Management role (A Bid Manager is an executive sales role within an organisation, responsible for managing bids in response to Request for Proposals (RFPs) from clients: Wikipedia Definition) at Capgemini under Chrysalis, their Student Internship programme. I am a computer science engineer and marketing are my love. Beyond this, I love writing. Bid management at Capgemini (a leading Giant in the IT Sector, aligned with my undergrad background) involves writing proposals which require marketing skills to pitch the company. More than all of this, my work location was Hyderabad – The Paradise of Biryanis!; My chance to unite with my love for biriyanis!!! I was beyond thrilled and excited.
“You are the luckiest one in the batch” they screamed as I got placed for my summer internship. It was at GSK Pharmaceuticals for a role in Sales and Marketing. Being a post graduate in Biotechnology and terribly vocal about my affinity towards that field, everyone knew that getting to work in the pharmaceutical sector would be my dream. And to add to it, I had got my hometown with the office at a distance of 5 minutes by car. Needless to say, I was walking on air and waiting for my internship to start!
