The Birla’s: An Inspiration- Kuber Singh Manhas, NMIMS Mumbai

“Birla”, its a name which has been in the Indian conscience from even before the nation’s independence. It’s a family that has business interests in various sectors. Their ventures have touched millions of lives. Birla has also been an integral part of my journey to NMIMS as one of the most important part of my education, that is +1 and +2 were done in the Birla Public School, Doha. These years were very didactic and I also learned a lot of things especially the significance of not giving up under adversity, which is a value which was held in high regard at the school. I also learnt that one also has to be smart about the work and plan their work in such a way that it is executed in the most optimal way possible. The latter was lesson I learnt from the principal of the school himself who gave me advice when I was having a slightly tough time academically. Birla Public School was also a place which believed in fostering innovation and was a site for a lot of competitions. Another interesting titbit regarding the influence the Birla family has had on my life, the suit I wore while giving my interview for NMIMS was from Louis Phillipe, which is a brand owned by Aditya Birla. So I can say that Birla has been associated with me in the journey of my life so far and probably will be in the future also as my family has insurance from Aditya Birla Capital.

How will you define a surreal experience? Imagine you are driving on a bridge constructed in open seas, the cool breeze splattering in your face with a breath-taking view of high-rises on one side and sea on the other, portraying as if it’s a heinous crime committed if you take your eyes off it. While you are driving mesmerized by the scenic beauty, you could hear the waves below splashing on to the gigantic pillars that have been constructed in the sea with perfection, without damaging the network cables below, the lifeline of Mumbai city. Yes, I am talking about the Bandra-Worli sea link. The Bandra-Worli sea link, a bridge, which apart from providing us such an exhilarating experience, also aids to reach Worli from Bandra, reducing travel time from 30 minutes (in peak hours) to approximately 10 minutes. Such an experience would not have been possible without UltraTech Cement of Aditya Birla Group, providing as much as 0.1 million mt of cement into the construction of Bandra-Worli sea link.

One would almost always assume that we as Indians grew up surrounded by fellow Indians, whether it be our first teacher, first friends or first neighbors, but that wasn’t the case for me. The first school I ever joined was an International school in Japan, with a faculty that included no Indians, and I was surrounded by classmates of over a dozen different nationalities. The reason I have mentioned this is to put things in perspective, because this is how most of my life before college has been like. Life has been quite the roller coaster ride, as I have moved around a lot, starting my education in Japan, returning to India and then going back and forth until I arrived in Chandigarh from Bangkok in 2006. The real challenge began here.

Aditya Birla Group , an Indian multinational conglomerate operates in 35 countries with more than 120,000 employees worldwide .The group was founded by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla in 1857. The group has interests in viscose staple fibre, metals, cement (largest in India), viscose filament yarn, branded apparel, carbonblack, chemicals, fertilisers, insulators, financial services, telecom, BPO and IT services. You just name the industry and Aditya Birla Group is there. The group has been a part of my life throughout satisfying my demands as consumer with its wide range of services and products. The house that I live in has the “engineers’ choice cement” i.e the Ultratech cement. The phone network that I use is probably the fastest 4G network in India and is probably “what an IDEA sirjee”. Aditya Birla group is an important player in public infrastructure projects such as bridges, metro rail networks ,roads etc. The most important aspect of the group in my life is in fashion and clothing. I always prefer clothes with good quality fabric and that also goes with the fashin trend . With its wide range of clothing brands such as Allen Solly , Louis Phillipe,Peter England, Van Heusen , I can get the best quality clothing that mathes with the current trend . In fact I have always been fascinated by these brands and it gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction as a costumer if I wear one of those.

PANTALOONS is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Aditya Birla Group. In the last 4-5 years, Pantaloons has become my go-to brand for all kinds of clothing utilities. My journey at EY started with Peter England shirts and trousers and today I am writing this article wearing a Byford t-shirt in the library of NMIMS where I am pursuing my full time MBA.
