When the country was engulfed in the chains of British monarchy, a starry-eyed boy from Pilani, Rajasthan dreamt of setting up a business right under the noses of the British trading companies. Seth Shiv Narayan Birla started a small cotton and jute trading business in 1870s at Pilani which later came to be known as a gigantic conglomerate named Aditya Birla Group. As the 20th century approached, his son Ghanshyamdas took over the reigns and led the business into the industry by starting a jute mill in 1919.
