Why Aditya Birla Group is big in my life!
One of the most respectable Indian multinational conglomerates, Aditya Birla Group has touched the lives of millions. Employing more than 120,000 people, it has shaped the lives of billions. From “What an Idea Sirji!” to “Honest shirt”, the conglomerate has instilled trust in the hearts of its customers.
From the foil in my tiffin, to the sim card in the first phone that my dad gifted, to the honest shirt I wore for my placement interview in college, to getting selected in one of its subsidiaries, ABFRL, the Group has played a significant role in my life. On my second day at the headquarter of ABFRL, when I was allotted my mentor Yogesh Babu, the fact that he was the NROM of Peter England made me nervous. Being a fresher, getting a man with such profound experience as my mentor made me think whether I would ever be able to live up to his expectations. My first interaction with him made me realise the true spirit and culture of the Group. In spite of his busy schedule, right from day one he ensured that he helped me by constantly mentoring me and making me understand how the retail sector works. I still remember him saying,” Although the internship is of two months, I want you to take as many opportunities you can to learn the most and you can reach out to me even when you have the slightest of doubts.” It was his guidance that helped me in completing my project and creating a decision tree thus adding value, both to me and to the organization. I was very lucky to get such exposure at an entry level post of ABFRL. I feel that this is the true spirit of the Group. As quoted by Kumar Mangalam Birla himself, “The work environment is very important in determining how enjoyable work is. It is very important to work with smart guys who have a superior level of intellectual bandwidth and still have softer skills as well.”
The trust that the Group’s brands created ever since my childhood and the trust that the Group maintained while me being a part of it, is what sets it apart from the other companies in the world!
How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambitions in life so far!
I was the publicity head of the IEEE Student Branch Council of my college in third year. I managed a 25-member team and marketed more than 11 events in the college technical festival “WHIZION, 2K15.” Each event involved around 15 people. In spite of my co-publicity head being on leave, we managed to get more than 1,200 entries for our events, setting a new record. This instance made me realize that nothing is impossible and we should focus on the resources we have and make the most out of them. When I left college and joined a job in one of the biggest conglomerates of India, it made me realize that the job was not aligned with my future goals. Thus, I prepared a plan for myself. To upgrade the skills of my choice, I developed a keen interest in using online educational platforms like Udemy and Coursera. I used to ensure finishing one course per month. I also decided to pursue MBA. With only two months to NMAT, I studied smartly and cleared the test. It was a big risk to take more than a month’s leave right in the first few months’ post joining. But my self-belief, hard work and determination helped me in achieving my goal. Post joining NMIMS, I realized that I needed practical exposure and to achieve that, I reached out to many corporates for projects. I was successful in doing a few with market leaders. I believe that we should not have the fear of “Asking for help” and not consider it as a weakness. Thus, my nature of being a go-getter has immensely helped me in overcoming challenges so far.
