I presume this piece of writing is going to find little interest in your daily life, but hold still! Just before you scroll through the page, let me narrate to you a fraction of my experience at MetLife and how the work culture and heritage of the company amazed me during my tenure as an Intern.
It is said that life presents us with glorious opportunities to shine and succeed in establishing a future for ourselves. IIM Shillong has been a blessing to me since the day I joined and time and again I have realized how crucial this place has been in shaping my future professionally as well as personally. Coincidentally, I had the same feeling when I received the e-mail to work as a summer intern at MetLife!
A beautiful experience and activity-filled summer at MetLife convinced me that even a traditional company with more than 150 years of domain experience and over 50K employees across the globe can foster the culture of including fresh perspectives and adopt strategic innovation. Trust me, I was never treated as an intern but like a normal employee during the two-month-long adventure.
When I was applying for Internship at MetLife, I was a little apprehensive as the roles floated was not aligned to my career choices at the moment, but looking at the rich heritage that the company offered, I took up the opportunity of exploring the options a bit further. As they say, fortune favors the bold, during the interview an unexpected event occurred. Satisfied with my credentials and profile, the interviewer offered me the position of a Project Management Intern. Accepting the offer has been one of the best decisions I have ever taken in my life.
In MetLife GOSC, I was a part of an 11-member cohort of summer interns from business schools across the country. This was by far one of the most diverse and accomplished group of peers I have had the opportunity to work with. I worked in the Market and Competitive Strategy, Transformation Practices team directly reporting to the Manager of Strategy Consulting. The Project involved an evaluation of the digital strategies of selected global insurers to enhance customer experience and conduct a competitive analysis with that of MetLife. It helped me learn how a market study is conducted and also illuminated my knowledge of competitive intelligence.
Oprah Winfrey said, “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself”. I was fortunate to have had the support of my mentor who continuously exposed me to the intricate details of the internship at length for over two months. The guidance and feedback I received from the top-level management are delightful and comforting.
Although the pandemic created a hindrance in experiencing the friendly, employee-centric, encouraging, and supportive workspace of MetLife at Noida, the gap was effectively filled in by the rejuvenating virtual sessions conducted by the HR team. The interactive virtual sessions ended with the virtual ‘Happy Hours’ on the last day of the internship. I am thankful to everyone who helped me enjoy these two months at the company and allowed me to be a part of the MetLife Family.
