To prepare for the interview round, you should not wait for the time till your shortlisting is announced or the interview schedule is fixed. Those who made it to the final list would advise the same and so do I. Remember that the selection rate at IIT is fairly low and if you don’t prepare well, then the opportunity lands with some other candidate who was better prepared for his/her interview. Remember, opportunity knocks on the door once, and you do not want yourself to be underprepared.
YOU FOLLOW these methods used by me to ace my personal Interview and get into IIT DHANBAD.
1. Tackle the most obvious questions of the interview first:
“ Tell me about yourself.”
“Why do you want to do an MBA?”
Believe it or not, these questions are common in any PI, so prepare for them beforehand. There is no right or wrong answer to such a question. Just keep your answer crisp and 3 min concise. Be honest and speak truthfully, it would look amazing.
2. Show that you are continuing to learn or grow in your desired field: Tell about any competition, meetup/events you’ve participated in& that were relevant and meaningful, and anything else that demonstrates you’re actively involved in learning and doing.
3. Prepare your domain-specific topics very well:
Students from varied academic backgrounds get admitted here. I tell you with certainty that you will receive some technical question in some form or the other.
4. Mental Preparation:
Be calm and confident. Believe that you can nail the interview. Do not stress yourself by seeing last-minute tutorial videos. Behave like it is a normal day. Imagine yourself leaving the interview knowing you’ve done your best- visualize your day going great and the interview being perfect. The more you affirm your capabilities to yourself, the better your chances will be of a successful interview.
5. After the interview:
Don’t forget to say thank you to your interviewer. It's a note of gratitude to them for their valuable time. Be humble and be ready for any outcome. Assess yourself on what went right or what went wrong.
6. Facing Interview Rejection :
There might be some rejections from some IIT/IIMs of the world. My advice will be to learn to move on and embrace the disappointment. Repeat in your mind that you are enough because you are. You may never get to know the exact reason why the outcome is so directed. There could be a ton of possibilities like some other guy expressed better than you; or changes in marking based on work ex, percentage, whatever, or maybe change in policy by reservation on category or more seats carved out for women candidates. Reasons are endless and something no one can control.
That's why, rather than thinking about what went wrong, emphasize what went right. Learn and Improve yourself to achieve a favourable outcome in the next interviews in your pipeline. In
the words of John Winston Ono Lennon,
“Everything will be okay in the end. If it is not okay, it’s not the end.”
