When I think of Aditya Birla Group, few of the first things that immediately come to my mind are suave Louis Philippe dresses and powerful Van Heusen suits! The reason why these were the first few things that popped in my mind, may be related to the fact that currently I am pursuing MBA, and just getting ready for the corporate world of Powerpoint Presentations, Power-Moves and Power Suits!

When I think further, it becomes clear to me that corporate world or MBA is not only about the things mentioned above, but much more! Mostly it is about using one's skills for benefit of the businesses and communities. It is about dexterously handling one's responsibilities and working towards one's ambition with determination and hard-work; to make it Big in life... and that’s where I can relate to Aditya Birla Group again!

Aditya Birla Group is big in my life because I rely on the sturdiness of metals (copper being one of them) that go into Mumbai local trains which I use for my daily commute. I have been relying on Vodafone-Idea network for last 10 years to be connected to my family, while I traveled alone to the remotest areas. Aditya Birla Group is big in my life because it is about reliability- a quality I wish to see in myself as I enter into the powerful corporate world; but, more importantly, because the Group inspires me to work on the smallest details to make it big in life!

I have experienced the importance working on the smallest details recently.

Having completed my school education in vernacular medium, I developed good understanding of the subjects. My teachers and parents helped me gain a grip over English grammar and encouraged me to read English literature to ensure that I do not struggle with English language during my graduation and in professional life. Public speaking was always deemed as my strength by my teachers and peers; I considered it as my passion.  Perhaps because of all these reasons, I was surprised when it was my first attempt at public speaking, on a professional platform, in English; and I stood frozen on the stage!

In subsequent attempts, I failed even more miserably! It was after 4 or 5 failures I realized that this could go either way… I may choose to believe that I ‘cannot’ speak well in English and accept my defeat, perhaps develop a permanent fear of public speaking; or I may learn from the experience and start focusing on what was going wrong instead. I made the later choice. I joined Toastmasters Club of my company and started working on my communication skills from scratch.

The change was gradual, but significant. What was even better was the journey that I experienced! I not only worked towards overcoming my challenge, but also fell in love with the art of public speaking all over again as I discovered the intricacies of it and saw myself getting better at it! I won the “Table-topics Master” award at one of the club level competitions, further polished and honed my skills during my curriculum in MBA. Over the years, I realized that I had not only overcame my challenge in public speaking, but had gotten much better at it, in turn becoming a lot more confident person overall! In a way, by learning to work upon the smallest details, I could see a big difference in my personal and professional life... In that frame of reference, yes... I made it Big!
