The confirmation
The word that dominant the ambience as soon as you step in a B-school is "SIP" i.e The summer internship. The enormous preperation for GD's, PI and numerous processes even that have slightest chances to happen, keep you one toes with rigrous academics. But as you grab a dream offer in mumbai's cruel humidity on your D-day, you feel at another level (beware, this remians only for a short time becasue B-schools are never generous). Same happened with me after getting confirmation to be a part of India's leading consutling firm that too in supply chain.
Days of Excitement before joining
You have almost 7 months before the commencement of the journey. These months are much relaxed as compared to initial months but very important in terms to enhance your skills and prepare mentally to prove your worth and their trust with you. Since, you are aware of the area for you work you try to network with seniors, alums and industry persons. An excitement for gonna be a part of pretigious organisation and new responsibilites in always there throughout the period. I focusssed on brushing my Excel skills, learning about consulting ambience and the pre-requisite for the same though books, videos and personal interaction. Also, you follow company pages, connect with staff through likedin and try to get an holistic view of company culutre.
The actual journey
- Joining process
Companies start conatcing you as early as in December or in Late March just after your exam for joining formalities. Whatapp groups are formed by HR's to get acquinted with interns and 'break the ice' among interns. I got commincation in early march for my location prefrences and joining dates at as per requirement. Supposedly, to start in early april the joining was shifted to may owning to the unnfortuante circumstnaces and entire mode was changed to remote. The company always maintined their promise to not to revoke the offers and communicated regularly. A regular communication from comapny is important in these extreme times when situation are unpredictable avoid any negativity.
2. Project details
The company promised to provide live project and it maintained that even in these times. Current time due to pandemic is definitely not favourable to Consulting business as restrictions on travel which is a essential activity in this business. I worked on a project for client who was a leading Steel comapny and wanted to redefine its logisitics business after a huge change in business organisation. Lucky enough, to get to work on a 'strategy consulting' project for supply chain, the project team helped me a lot to understnad the project details, client requirement and the objectives. During my 6-week stint, i worked extensively to deep dive in world of logistics to analysis & align the requirements of client with oppourtunities present.
The Learnings and takeaways
- The company has extremely good stronghold in Suppply chain and consulting domain.
- The Culture is open, with people eager to learn and share. I felt a friendly ambience and got to learn very high end projects excecuted by company.
- Consulting is a project type business, you work with very learned people and required to be updated everytime. it is very easy to miss the bus.
- Client may have plothera of requirements and many times they just dream so you walk on a tight-rope balancing your and his ego.
- if you are not presentable, you must have to learn that because it is extremely essential in this domain.
- Be calm in your internship, try to grab most. The opportunity is very valuable.
One thing that only this year batch has experienced in entire MBA history
Things can extremely awry and shatter you but only an optimistic and positive mindset can sail you. Try untill its done.
