Part A- Why Aditya Birla Group is big in my life

A US $44.3 billion corporation, the Aditya Birla Group is one of the premier business conglomerates of India. The company is led by the visionary Kumar Mangalam Birla, son of Aditya Birla. It operates in 35 countries with a strong workforce of over 1,20,000 employees. The company acts as a holding company for more than 72 manufacturing and services subsidiaries throughout India and abroad. It functions under a wide range of sectors including viscose staple fibre, metals, cement (largest in India), viscose filament yarn, branded apparel, carbon black, chemicals, fertilizers, insulators, financial services, telecom, BPO and IT services amongst many others. These operations combine to generate a whopping $7.6 million yearly.

Additionally, the Aditya Birla Group aims to become the leading Indian conglomerate for sustainable business practices across its global operations. It aims to follow the three steps of the ABG Sustainability model to help adjust its performance to meet the ever tightening demand of a sustainable planet and society. The three steps are:

  • Responsible Stewardship
  • Strategic Stakeholder Engagement
  • Future Proofing

To be able to contribute to the society is something that is close to my heart and hence I appreciate the social initiatives taken by the Aditya Birla Group covering Healthcare, Education, Sustainable livelihood programmes, Infrastructure etc. All these are potential areas for the country’s growth and future.

With such a dedicated approach to contribute to the country, the group has built a strong reputation amongst the people of all socio-economic groups. A strong focus on stakeholder value creation coupled with generosity and compassion is the pillar of strength of their CSR policy which shall help maintain their brand value for many many more years to come.

Part B –  How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambitions in life so far

There are generally two types of people we come across. One, who are optimistic and tend to look at the brighter side of life. Second, who constantly indulge in complaining and grumbling about the adversities of the life. I have had a fair share of challenges too in my life but they came with constant support and care from my loved ones who have supported me throughout.

One of the major obstacles I have faced in my life and still face, is that of people who lack empathy. These people are the ones who are inconsiderate and try to impose themselves on others. However, I came to the conclusion that such people lack substance. During my academic and professional life it seemed as if I was getting affected by such people, but I found some trustworthy colleagues who not only took my mind off my problems but also helped me focus on the more important things in life.

Another challenge I faced was the "Fear of Failure". We humans have the general tendency to stay within our comfort zone and resist change. We always hesitate to try something new that would alter our perspective of life and give us a fresh outlook. We often forget that even if we fail in the process, what’s more important is the learning we obtain. I was always limited by the very same and hence could not “grow” as a result. I could not eliminate this shortcoming of mine but eventually learned not to let it dominate me.

I have finally come to realize that one must not get discouraged from the harsh experiences in life, but rather bank upon these to learn invaluable lessons which would act as stepping stones to success in the long run.
