‘The harder the struggle, the more glorious the triumph. Self-realization demands very great struggle.’ - Swami Vivekananda.
Success is addictive. Being successful is a habit. What they never tell is the effort that goes into forming a wish into habit.
Like everyone, there were many challenges in the path leading to my ambitions as well. All of them have shaped me into what I am today. Yet, the most prominent and life altering of them all was my constant struggle with all the bullying I had to face since I was a kid. I was in an accident and got a broken nose when I was 5 years old. Among the many things that followed in the coming months was a series of operations and medical diagnosis that was to continue for years after. The good part was I got all the attention all the time. The not so good part was - after I re-joined my school following six months my treatment, I had to face constant bullying from my peers. What made it worse was the occasional comments by the teachers and other children’s parents. As a child undergoing a lot of physical pain, the taunts and name-calling made it harder to come-back into the mainstream studying and attending classrooms. Fortunately, I had the means and resources to fight-back. I came from a family with good background and my parents ensured I got the best treatment or resources available. I just had to stand up for myself.
After initial ups and downs, the path had been more or less uniform. Slowly the name-calling stopped. I wasn’t booed when I climbed any stage. Good academics of course boosted my morale and people around gained a perspective till then. My take-away from this entire incident was that unless you stand up for yourself, no one else can ever help you out. And it isn’t that hard, it gets easier with each passing day. Also, as you start excelling, some people would never appreciate you. The only way is to fight your way to the top. More than anything, it is the mental strength and hard-work that leads to success.
There were several other struggles as well in my life - mostly during the teenage years. But as I have already mentioned, the key is to take a step back, analyse and then fight your way to the top.
