Chapter 1: The Preparation

RB followed a multi-stage screening process, wherein I was assessed in technical expertise, the motive to join RB, and cultural fit for the organization. I came out with flying colors and was excited to kick off my career in one of the best health and hygiene companies with a diversified portfolio, and so does the supply chain.

I tried to make use of all opportunities that were bestowed upon me to prepare myself for the summers. Right from my classroom, I covered Operations Management, SCM, Applications of AI & ML, and IEOR as a part of NITIE's curriculum. Parallelly, I learned from case studies, guest lectures, and brushed up on excel skills to get ready for the project.

I had no clue what life had in store for me, and then COVID – 19 happened.

Chapter 2: The Welcome

Amidst the chaos and the uncertainty over the offer's position, a respite arrived in the form of an update from the HR team, informing us regarding delay for a week followed by virtual onboarding, and the entire duration of the project will have to be delivered remotely. Though it was a sense of relief, the word 'virtual' came up with its own set of constraints, even before the project was assigned. It was time to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. When the mission is at hand, no act is off-limit.

A weeklong induction program gave the big picture of how RB functions and interaction with the India leadership team gave valuable insights into various domains. Taking out time from the busy schedules for interns was a commendable gesture from ILT. Kudos to the TA team here, for smooth onboarding and helping us get accustomed to the new normal.

Chapter 3: The Experience

I got an automation project in the areas of supply planning and logistics domain. In the current scenario, RB portfolio is need of the hour where demand is very high. Planning and logistics have a pivotal role in meeting the requirement, which implied that these teams had to be on their toes and needed to put their best foot forward.

However, even in the busiest of their schedules, the team extended helping hand in understanding the project and executing it. To deserve their attention, all it took was a sincere intention to learn and exhibiting the right enthusiasm to perform by asking the right questions.

At least in these unprecedented times, it was vital to churn out the best possible insights from my stakeholders in the time allotted. At no point, I felt like an intern; they were treating me as an equal member of the RB family from day 1.

TA team always stayed connected through the due course; we had fun online events and weekly catchups. It also helped me to interact with co-interns, which later went on to WhatsApp candid discussions.

I kept interacting with my guide and sponsor at least once a week to discuss the progress and to keep the project on track. Labour plus a bit of luck helped me to deliver and meet the expectations set successfully. I feel privileged that I got a chance to contribute to making things better and glad, for providing a playground to learn and grow. The journey was nerve-wracking but rewarding.

Chapter 4: The Learnings

- "No war has ever been won alone," it's always important to collaborate with the right stakeholders and pursue the project. Just stay curious.

- An internship is a place to have hands-on exposure and think outside the box, to pitch in ideas. It's ok if the ideas get rejected, but it boosts the confidence in presenting the ideas to a leadership team.

- The reality is entirely different from what is present in the textbook. Having a sound approach and planning plays a crucial role in completing the project in a given time frame.

"Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors." Give a warm welcome to the challenges to make it a much more memorable experience.
