The Small Town Kid’s Dream

Hailing from a Tier-3 city of Odisha, dreaming big was a luxury in childhood. The reason being, I was not surrounded by fascinating things unlike people living in metros. But as every cloud has a silver lining, I saw the future shining through the window of Aditya Birla Group.

I was barely five or six when I saw the Hirakud Smelter of Hindalco (Aditya Birla Group’s subsidiary) for the first time. I was flabbergasted beholding the size of the industry. Growing up, I got several other instances to know the company from diverse points of view. The scale in which it operates never failed to astonish me.

The best thing I find in this company is the way it affects the life of people living in and around the industry. The tales of how the city of Sambalpur is growing because of Hindalco is a bedtime story in every household of my hometown. Such is the effect a company can create to not just earn profits but also to help a country grow.

When several other companies see Corporate Social Responsibility as a hindrance from achieving their capitalist goals, I myself have seen Hindalco using it as an opportunity to help people. Even after having a huge smelting plant in the heart of Hirakud, one cannot find an iota of pollution in the areas nearby. The developmental activities it has done around the place are beyond imagination. Hindalco actually treats the environment it functions in as its home and the people as its family.

Hindalco is setting milestones for companies to make them understand that the goal of a company is not just to earn revenues or tread into bigger economies but also to help the country grow. It is setting examples in Giving Back. The Indianness is embedded in its work-culture and ethics.

For me, Aditya Birla Group is a motivational factor. The scale of the industry has always forced me to scale my dreams to its scale. This unidirectional relationship has helped me to peep into a world that was unexplored for me. The sequence of dreaming and working hard has landed me in one of the most coveted institutes of India where the grind is so severe that I can bet I will be ready to face the grill of the corporate world the moment I graduate.

My happiness knew no bound the moment I realized that I may get a chance to work for my dream company when I saw the logo of ABG in XIMB’s Brochure. It would be like partnering with something which had always motivated me to dream big and hence has created a better human being out of me. I look forward towards a period of extreme grilling, learning and evolving during my tenure in XIMB & again into the facets of the first job of my life.
