Trust, values and belief are the building blocks of one’s life. They have in a way already defined the pavements one would walk on. My story starts from the densely populated streets of Shahdara, a populated middle class district in the north east of Delhi. While my entire teenage years were spent there, I got to witness shahdara’ evolution from middle class joint houses to nuclear families and development of houses to multistorey flats. Our family too had a big house of fourteen people living together under the same roof. Growing up, I could see my family looking to reconstruct our house into multi flats to accommodate growing needs of everyone in the family. My grandfather took the lead on this and decided to demolish existing building and reconstruct the flats there. Our family of fourteen was asked to shift on temporay basis to nearby houses till the construction would be done.
Two blocks away was a store named “Hari om building materials store” that kept with it all the construction materials for the house. My grandfather himself procured all the materials required for reconstruction of house from there but the differentiating and memorable ones that I vividly remember was the Ultratech cement bags purchased. They had daily utility in construction and were used entire day in day out for making the buildings.
It took around ten months for the entire construction and I could see Ultra tech bags all around in the making of our house. Looking back on those days, It was difficult times to see family separated temporarily for a twelve year old boy, but the trust and calm in my grandfather and materials he used, especially the Ultratech cements made the process smoothest and trust worthy for all of us. I remember often asking him on what made him choose the materials he did. He always claimed to have developed trust in items he had bought over long time, and especially the Ultatech cements which he had used earlier as well while constructing the house twenty years back. In a subtle way, Aditya Birla Group had impacted our lives for good by giving long lasting trust and image in our minds.
Even when I’ve shifted out of there for higher studies and jobs, I can reminiscence in every other residential construction every time I go back and find happening in shahdara and elsewhere in India.
It was the faith and going forward attitude of my grandfather that gave me the courage to pursue engineering from one of top institutes, IIT BHU in India and pursue my dream of working for Maharatna PSU in India. Later when I decided to pursue my MBA, it was the faith in self and perseverance I instilled during those days to keep pushing forward. It was the trust in self that pushed me to give CAT exam more than three times and not lose hope to pursue MBA from an institute of repute, and hence join MDI, Gurgaon. Aditya Birla Group’s Ultratech cement had in a subtle way had big part in pushing me for it by reminding of my teen years. I sincerely hope to keep these values alive in me and develop myself as human of right values and trust and give back selflessly to the family and society.
