Aditya Birla Group was brought to life in the picturesque town of Pilani set amidst the Rajasthan desert, dating back to the 19th century. It was here that Mr. Seth Shiv Narayan Birla started trading in cotton, laying the foundation for the House of Birla. And further, with expansion, it went on to become one of India’s largest conglomerate. Today it operates in 35 countries with more than 1,20,000 employees worldwide, active across 14 sectors and has achieved global and national leadership in several businesses.
Being an Indian it is not possible for one to not know about Aditya Birla Group. It began with my childhood where Hindalco Freshwrapp was the go-to option for a healthy and hygienic alternative to traditional food packaging. Let that be to pack the food for the lunch box or to carry food during outings and picnics.
Also being the daughter of a Civil Engineer, UltraTech Cement was the talk of the house. Cement is the most important part for the construction of any structure, as it has the ability and strength to hold the structure together. So my dad always praised UltraTech cement for its strength & reliability and used to say proudly that it is “The Engineer’s choice”.
And then, one of the constraints during Engineering was the budget. Any amount of money sent by parents always felt less. That’s where Pantaloons and People helped me out. To purchase a wide variety of clothes for daily wear at the best price. Also, Forever 21 was the brand that came to rescue during party occasion. And when it was time for interview apparel shopping, no one could beat Allen Solly and Van Heusen, which are known for its style, affordability, & high quality.
So Aditya Birla Group has actively played its role throughout my life and that is why I believe Aditya Birla Group is big in my life.
How I overcame challenges to achieve my ambition in my life?
“The glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time you fail”
Let me start my story with some background. I come from small-town Mudhol, Karnataka, where educational opportunities were limited. I am an Electronics and Instrumentation Engineer, who graduated from one of the decent colleges of Karnataka. Up until 12th standard, I didn’t even know the significance of IIM. So getting into one was never the dream for me, because it appeared just too far.
I did well in my engineering courses, but I knew there was no growth for me in that field. Speaking to a few friends and mentors, I decided to start my coaching for CAT, to pursue an MBA. I started my preparation in the month of October 2016 so I can appear for CAT 2017, with the aspiration to get into IIM. Scoring 100 on 100 in mathematics during my 12th standard, I thought it would be a cakewalk to clear CAT. Not so. While practicing I was able to solve most of the complex quantitative numerical, and hence I was confident about Quant being my strong point.
On 25th November, after appearing for my CAT 2017, I realized I solved hardly 11 Quant questions. On the result day, I could see, my Quant result had pulled down my overall percentile to 83.83 percentile. I was frustrated & aggravated that I was unable to crack CAT. I
had the option to join the colleges that I would get at my percentile or quit or to prepare for CAT 2018.
I chose the latter one, to appear for CAT 2018. With my ongoing final year project and exams till June, I decided to study full time from July 2018. I attended all mock test, scored decent percentile in some mocks and not so well in others. I utilized this to identify the areas where I was struggling with. This time I made sure to prioritize time over difficult & lengthy questions.
On 5th January, the D-day, I entered my credentials and was anxiously waiting for the result to pop up. And then it said:
Overall Percentile 95.05
I couldn’t contain my excitement, for 0.05 percentile made a difference. One needs 95.00 minimum percentile to get a call from the new IIMs. And from that moment I started to prepare for my interview, because I knew that the opportunity never knocks twice. And that was the opportunity where I wanted to prove myself, not to my family, not to my friends but myself. And finally on 12th May, 2019 at 3:05 PM I received mail from IIM Raipur, stating I was offered admission at IIM Raipur.
What I believed throughout my journey was persistent efforts can overcome any difficulty.
