Having more than 3 years of work experience in IT, I would just pray before the pre-screening of any company to be eligible to at least be able to attend the interview process. But it always happened that candidates with more than 2 years of work experience would not be shortlisted only. My preparation was at its peak, when there was a form floated for Bigbasket opt-in. I visited their website and collected information about the history of bigbasket, end to end operation of bigbasket, various labels etc. On the day of orientation, I was able to relate to a lot of the concepts and I even answered one question. So, the very first thing that I felt which was important was being proactive in our preparation and gathering as much knowledge as possible about the company. Knowing details about the company always helps, giving us an edge over the others. Next came our first round, the GD round where mostly our communication skills were tested. I had gotten just 2-3 chances to speak but the panels were mainly looking for candidates speaking sense with a good communication. I got through the GD and next was personal interview where mainly our problem-solving ability was tested along with basic marketing knowledge.

Finally, the D-Day arrived, I had done some research over basics of retail marketing, online retailing, visual merchandising etc. First few days were spent on induction where we were told about the business model of Bigbasket, various operations, team structure etc. I was assigned to the Buying and merchandising-FMCG department. The project allocated to me was “Best on-app asset analysis-A detailed analysis of banner reports”. I was given many dump reports for the march-april 19 cycle. My first job was to clean this huge amount of data and bring it to workable form. The following were the objectives of my project:

  • Banners that generate the maximum sales
  • Suggest the best assets for each category
  • Category growth through visibility
  • Suggestions and advices to companies/brands
  • Understanding and presenting how waterfall/cascading works
  • Banner with and without offers
  • Comparative analysis of the banners in different levels done city wise
  • How to advertise a new product on the app
  • How information/content works in the banner

Mere analysis of the banner reports was not enough. I had to come up with suggestions about which how a new product can be advertised on the Bigbasket app based on the list of inferences. I came up with suggestions about how sales can be increased for a slow moving product, how the content in the banner would appear, etc.

During the course of the internship I was constantly guided by Mr. Sudhanva Kumar and mentored by Mrs. Anadavalli Sujata who were a constant source of support. Both were easily approachable and would clear any doubts that I had then and there.

Overall I’m sure even though I had made a lot of mistakes but also I’ve learnt from the mistakes and enjoyed my 2 months in Bigbasket to the fullest.
