As a young Mechanical Engineer, I wanted to work for a manufacturing firm especially iron and steel manufacturing firm. As I graduated, I was selected by major steel manufacturing firm. I was very happy for myself but life without challenge is as bland as a good dish without salt. As I started working for my firm, I was made the In-charge of a shift at a very early stage because the company I was working for was short on manpower. This meant I had to lead a team of 10 operators, some of whom were exactly double my age. However, I was confident about my abilities and was sure I will be able to handle the team efficiently.
Initial days of career as a Shift In-charge was anything but easy. My team had a propensity of taking me lightly because of my age. Despite all these, I never lost patience and slowly started understanding the minds of my team. I started understanding how to make them work towards the company’s goal. I gelled with my team so well, that nobody cared about my age which was my team’s biggest worry initially. Soon our team became very efficient that our team had the least machine setup time.
All this taught me one thing. Never to lose patience and belief in yourself. Be patient and understand your surroundings and team and you can move mountains. Challenges are temporary. They will come and go. One should never stop walking towards one’s ambition because of some challenge.
