ABG- BIG in my life-TAPMI
Why Aditya Birla Group is big in your life?
I would like to answer this by drawing a parallel with my journey from my home to TAPMI, Manipal. Right from the moment I woke up that day, I realise as I write this article, I was experiencing one or the other offerings of ABG in some way or the other. The home that I resided in, has been strengthened and plastered by Ultratech cement products. When I left my home, and walked down the street towards the station to catch my train to Manipal, I passed by a store selling clothing brands like Allen Solly, Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Peter England and the likes. I remembered, it was only a few years ago that I was informed that these brands were all established and originated in different parts of the world but were now owned by ABG. I somehow felt amused and proud at the same time when I got to know that. The railways that I used to get to my destination i.e. Manipal, is also something where ABG has imprinted itself since Birla copper is considerably used in signalling systems, besides all the miscellaneous needs for pantographs, switchgear, brake systems, motor windings, commutator bars, large and small service stations, etc. I got down the train in Manipal and walked over to the nearest café to pack some food. They pulled out a pack of Freshwrapp Aluminium Foil, wrapped my lunch, and handed it over. Yet again, it was ABG to the rescue. This time by keeping my food warm in the form of one of Hindalco’s products. I took a cab ride to my hostel. ABG has lends itself here too as it is a global leader in Carbon Black which is used in every second car in the world.
A week passed. As I treaded back to my hostel room after a sustainability workshop at TAPMI, I kept lamenting whether big corporate houses actually care about a sustainable future. I bought a can of soda and began to wonder ‘What happens to these cans after consumption?’. After some research, I was pleasantly surprised to find in one of the links that Hindalco Novelis of ABG recycles 65 billion cans annually. Every 3rdaluminium can in the world is made from Hindalco Novelis, thus displaying their commitment to sustainability.
As I entered my hostel, I got a call from my Mom on my IDEA number. Idea Cellular was started as a joint venture with two other companies. I remember it as the sim card that became an instantaneous hit when it launched its hugely popular campaign titled ‘An Idea can change your life.
These are only some of the many examples of how I came across ABG products in my everyday life. Well, an idea can indeed change your life. ABG, an idea that had its genesis some 162 years ago has, as a business house surely changed my life and the lives of many many Indians for the better. From building everlasting infrastructure, educational institutions to employing more than 120,000 people worldwide, from its CSR activities, to bringing forth products and services that have a tangible effect on the lives of billions, I believe ABG, in the Indian business scene, has led by example over the years. I believe, it has and will keep on delivering on its mission statement ‘To deliver superior value to our customers, shareholders, employees and society at large.’ Hence, without doubt, ABG, indeed has been and continues to be ‘BIG’ in my life.
