Walking to the beat of some English pop music that she has never heard of, nor understand. Empowered with my credit card that has my first salary, my grandmother walked in the Pantaloon’s store to buy her first branded bag. She gets distracted by the plethora of kurti’s around and goes looking for one that suits her fancy. Its not for her of course, but me. While browsing through umpteenth suits she reminds me for the 100th time in the past few years that her association with the Birla’s started back in 1960’s when my Grandfather got her their first car: An Ambassador. I pull her towards an aisle of handbags pick one out from a row and turn it upside down to check for the quality. Grandma is offended. She gently takes it from my hands and reminds me, the makers of lakhs of dream houses were unlikely to get a handbag wrong. She walks towards the paying counter with a sense of pride and ownership of buying such a product. Being a 78-year-old lady she values money but doesn’t blink once while paying. While walking out she recites several other sectors ABG operates in, explaining to me the importance of diversifying. She is proud of the fact that this company of which people were in awe in her younger days continues to do so in her granddaughters’ generation. She has seen the world change and has adapted to much of it, but holds on and cherishes a few that has been constant such as her husband, memories and Birla group.
Birla group reminds me of my grandmother, my constant so far. Resilient and Constant through the everchanging time servicing this generation and next.
