Founded in year 1857, as a jute manufacturing company by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla, the Aditya Birla as of today, is one of India’s largest conglomerate with its presence in more than 35 countries across the globe, employing around 1,40,000 worldwide. Under the leadership of Kumar Mangalam Birla, the group’s turnover has increased over 22 times from US$ 2 billion to US$ 44.3 billion just under a span of 25 years.
With its presence across varied market segments like fashion, communications, insurance, real estate, chemical, metal and many other, the Aditya Birla Group is associated to every citizen of India in some or the other form.
I was surprised to discover the massive presence of Aditya Birla Group in my day to day life. Getting ready for the office by wearing formals from Peter England, packing the lunch in Hindalco’s freshwrapp, entering the building’s premises built using Ultratech cement, making a call to mother in noon using Vodafone Idea Limited network and other countless incidents.
The Corporate Social Responsibility is carried out by Aditya Birla Group at massive scale with their mission “Making a Difference”. The CSR activities carried out by the group is not limited to a specific category or carried out according to their interests or preferences. The activities are aligned with the government schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, MGNREGA, Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and several other schemes across healthcare, education, infrastructure and sustainable livelihood programmes. The Aditya Birla Group works in 5,000 villages, reaching out to 7.5 million people annually through the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development.
