Housing in India has seen tremendous growth. It is a basic human need. The government is striving hard to make decent and affordable housing available to all families in rural and urban India. But many others play a huge rule in transforming the frail huts into sturdy homes.
My grandparents lived in a small village in Raigad, Maharashtra. As a kid I lived with them during the festivals and monsoon. Humble and happy, as the Indian farmers are, lack of permanent house structures were always a problem in the village. Due to the heavy rainfall in the region and traditional method of constructing houses using indigenous materials the structures suffered damage after every season of rain. It only added to the cost and worries of the farmers. It didn’t provide adequate protection from the harsh weather in summer and winters. Until one day I saw my grandfather taking up on himself the charge to change the scenario. Starting a community movement tackle the situation, he along with fellow villagers gained the support of the village panchayat to help them secure materials for building concrete houses and financial support.
Aditya Birla Group’s UltraTech Cement played a vital role in making it happen. With a good quality cement and bricks, the villagers worked hard to not only make permanent housing structures but also improved the sanitation system. The well-planned development materialized in a span of two years and consequently spread to neighbouring villages. This was followed with improvement in the village infrastructure by connecting it to highways and nearest towns and cities. UltraTech Cement was a fundamental reason for the prosperity.
