The 162 year old Indian Multinational conglomerate had laid its roots deep during 19th century by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla, where it started as a cotton trading company in the town of Pilani, Rajashthan. From then the business expanded in the forthcoming generations, started to set up industries in new sectors such as textiles and fibre, aluminium, cement and chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers. It became one of the successful industries during pre-independence era.
During 1969, the company expanded its branches overseas, establishing the first India-based multinational which put India on the World Map. The credit goes to Aditya Vikram Birla who opened the doors for globalization and thus by putting a strong foundation for the growth of the Birla groups in to the future for what it is today. The conglomerate now operates in 35 countries with more than 120,000 employees worldwide. The group has interests on viscose staple fibres, metals, cement, viscose filament yarn, branded apparel, carbonblack, insulators, financial services, telecom, BPO and IT services.
India as of today has numerous multinational companies and foreign investors from worldwide. But what makes the Aditya Birla Groups so special is that India grew along with the company’s growth. From railways to highways, fibres to wires, the products and services of the Birla groups are everywhere.
Being India’s first and largest cement manufacturer almost every building is built with their product Ultratech Cement. The Hindalco Industries a part the ABG manufactures non-ferrous metals like Copper, aluminium and metal products includes cast copper rods, wires, alloy wheels, roofing sheets, etc. They are the world’s largest producer of Viscose staple fibre which is are manufactured by the companies Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd and Grasim Bhiwani Textiles Ltd under the Birla Groups.
The group’s firm Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd sells in house brands such as Louis Phillippe, Allen Solly, Van Heusen, Peter England and People via their individual brand stores and through other multi brand outlets. It also operates a multi brand fashion retail chain called Pantaloons. The Group’s retail store enterprise ‘Madura Fashion and Lifestyle’ is one of the strongest developing brand clothes corporations throughout the Indian subcontinent. The Idea Cellular was started as a joint venture with the AT&T and the Tata Group. After merging with Vodafone in 2018 it became the largest telecom company in terms of subscribers and revenue, surpassing Airtel.
Aditya Birla Groups has made a legacy of being inevitable in everyone’s life in India and will continue to do so in future. As Americans are proud with their ford. We can also say it with pride that ‘India was built with Birla’.
