Sometimes it’s as simple as making your audience smile. Riding high on a wave of nostalgia of the ‘90s kids surrounding the Pokémon franchisee, Pokémon Go has taken the world by storm. The location-based, augmented reality (AR) mobile gaming app has gone viral, and its success may be attributed to the fact that it is helping young adults to rediscover their childhood dreams. For most ‘90s kids, it was a ritual to sit and watch the show at 5:00 pm after school every day. Cashing in on this memory, Niantic Inc. has made a game where players roam around, smartphone in hand, with an intention of capturing nearby Pokémons by flicking their Poké Balls. Just by staying hooked to your smartphone, you get to fulfill your fantasy of catching all the Pokémons.
In mid-June this year, I joined the Human Resource Management and Labour Relations programme at TISS Mumbai with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm, it was not only the start of a new chapter in my life but there was also a sense of achievement as only a lucky few get to be a part of the prestigious programme every year. The first few days at the institute were marked not just by new friendships, an orientation session and introductory lectures on HRM but also by guest lectures and a field visit to Larsen and Toubro. However, with June nearing its end, we eagerly waited for our Fieldwork Companies to be allotted and as soon as the companies were announced most of us beamed with joy as people were getting to intern with big corporate names like Reliance, Vodafone, Aditya Birla Group, Tata Power, Godrej, Axis Capital and even PSUs like BPCL and HPCL.

In our MBA programme, we have a process where-in seniors train the juniors for interview preparations and after sitting in two such processes where I was asking interview questions to juniors, one question always used to be “Why MBA” and the typical answer which I would receive and in fact which I myself would give was “learning”. Well to be fair, learning has always been one of the main reasons for pursuing MBA but most of us pursue this course to get better job opportunities which is justified given the fact how major companies hire “brand managers”, “sales managers” etc only through this route. However is learning the secret ingredient for bagging best placements?
Performance Management System has undergone a lot of changes in the recent past to effectively translate effort to performance. The old ways of assessing performance have proven to be costly and ineffective. Bell curve alias relative comparison has been observed to be time consuming and often detrimental to performance. Organizations such as Adobe, Accenture, Microsoft and Delloite have adopted new ways of assessing to enhance individual and organizational performance.
That the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would not cut its policy rate in the August bi-monthly review was almost a given. To that extent, there was no surprise in the monetary policy review on Tuesday. Far more interesting than the 2,175-word review was the statement that RBI governor Raghuram Rajan read out (it was roughly one-third of the policy review, in length) at the customary press conference after releasing the review. It ended intriguingly. “This is my last policy statement, but there are still 28 days in my term which I intend to use fully,” Rajan said.
This is that time of the year when an MBA college is hustling and bustling with first year students running around with their CVs. The seniors are in high demand and CV reviews are happening in bulk.
