“I should have paid more attention in the market research classes!” I was staring at the data in front of me and wondering how to make sense of it all.
I interned with Edelweiss during my summer. I was allotted to the Retail Finance department. This department did not recruit management students as the other departments did. So, in comparison to the other interns I got a mentor who was the senior vice-president of the department rather than an executive with 2-3 years of experience.
Placed with Tata Administrative Services (TAS) and being a fresher myself, there were a lot of emotions churning through my stomach as the day came closer. What to expect, How to behave, what would be expected of me, will I be able to meet those expectations, doubts, anxiety, excitement and much more. With all this circling through my head I boarded the flight to Mumbai for a day’s induction. After landing in Mumbai, I welcomed the luxurious room awaiting us interns at Taj Land’s End in Bandra and was mesmerized by the view from the hotel. Next morning, we were given a sneak peek into the vast Tata Enterprise and my was it something brilliant at Tata International. Right after the induction we packed our bags and left in different directions to our project destinations.
The other day when we were taught some practical applications for probability theory in our finance class, my background in music came in surprisingly handy. I am obviously indebted to my lessons from early childhood in music, sitar and guitar that have added a special flavor to my CV. But it’s obviously not just this. My knowledge in music gives me much more than just a diploma certificate and I am stunned at the kind of correlation I have lately discovered between music and MBA.

Call it ‘the city that never sleeps’ or the ‘city of dreams’ or ‘the financial capital of our country’, after staying here for a bit you will realize that the one thing that is almost synonymous to Mumbai is its ‘local trains’. 'Locals' of Mumbai epitomize the true spirit of unity in diversity that exists in our country. If we carefully ponder, we can easily derive a myriad of advantages (7 of which have been mentioned below) and realize how it teaches us life-long lessons that are instrumental in preparing us better for life that is only going to get more demanding in future.
This morning, my mother asked me to look for newspapers outside the door. I picked them up and saw the front page of TOI (Yes. We curse it everyday but like thousands of households in India, we still subscribe to a copy of the Times of India).
